A Shocker.

Nadal did not play his best. But lets give kudos to Steve who somehow managed to keep his nerve and win very tough two tie breaks and serve out in the third set.

Agreed.  I thought for sure Steve would blow it and become nervous or something, but he held it together really well.  He was also playing a lot of low slices that Nadal couldn't get down to.

Epic match from Darcis, pure grass lecture.

Nadal was horrible, running away too much from his backhand. Something you simply can't do on grass.

No lug it sucks (horrid result),i wanted the bigger seeds going deep.

bahh I like underdogs and great tennis so, its a nice result for me  ;-()

First time we had something different in the draw & this sh*t happens. On another note i wonder how long Nadal might stop playing, got to be something wrong with him Lug.

I don't see anything wrong with him physically.

As Hercs already said many times, he played like a coward.
He is running away too much from his bh side. He is so insecure on that shot that is getting really ugly to watch.
You simply can't play like that, especially on grass. Return on serve was also missing, and slice shots amateur-ish today.

I feel for his fans, my mum included  ..-) but I'm really glad for Darcis and players like him. His game today was perfect example of underdogs beating favorites on grass.

Agreed on what you say Dallas, you do have to bend your knee's more on grass than clay.

Both Roger and Murray looked solid.  So far Hewitt is looking good too.

Good win for both Andy & Roger in first round.Hewitt good on grass but so is Stan,i could see either guy winning this one, sort of a day thing & who gets it together.

Such a pity that Stan's least favorite surface is grass. He has all the goods for it and yet he's lacking something.
Lleyton is a real test for him. If he wins, it just might click for him  ;-()

I know.  This match is 50-50. It's a tough match-up for both of them for a first round match.

Stan is no mug on grass,i'm not so sure it's weaker surface.I've not forgotten the 5 sets he played v Murray.

Neither did I, but its safe to say its his least favorite surface, even he said it himself.
But I believe thats about to change. He's had great run this season. So his grass results might come from now on.

What...you only watch Novak now?????  No tennis earlier????? Shame on you! :innocent: :rofl_2:

My take.  It was 2 things:  (1) Steve was playing really well for him (grass court slices)...he actually even had a back-hand slice winner! and (2)  Nadal wasn't playing great.  He was too defensive but when he tried to play aggressive, he made a lot of errors.  So with the combination of Nadal not playing great, and Steve was probably playing over his head... you have an upset!  Steve kept his calmness and Nadal didn't really show a lot of 'fire'.

Seems it was Nadal's first R1 loss in a slam.

Mother of all upsets !!! Never in my wildest dreams did i imagine that rafa would lose in today's R1 match . .i thought he'd maybe lose a set as he hasn't played a match on grass yet, but a straight set loss ?? Who would've thought... :-S :-o
i haven't watched the match yet, so i'll reserve my comments for it later.. 40 hours to go for home sweet home..

I think Stan made a mistake about playing the tournament right before Wimbledon.  He should have either played Halle or Queens and rested last week. But I guess he'll learn.  Plus, Hewitt is playing pretty well too.

That's big trouble for Djokovic, he may have to play Fed now.  :rofl_2:

Stan is making too many unusual UE. Hewitt  is solid. Good match so far. I'm cheering for Hewitt atm but still wouldn't be surprised if this goes to 5 sets.

I'm wondering what Rafa said in his interview.

you are right. Fed's chances just went up and he is bad match up for Nole on grass.

Jamie Hampton didn't show up today against Sloane, either. She was even arching her back at the end (she has a history of lower back problems). Ironically, I've heard the older guys say that grass made them ache more than the other surface. They also said that the grass is much different in 3 Hertogenbosch where Hampton and Wawrinka reached the final last week. Faster with a lower bounce.

Stan seemed to just go to sleep at the wheel after he got up 4-1 in the second set. Now he's just playing patty-cake with Hewitt. He was so agressive against Djokovic in AO and Gasquet in RG it's disappointing to see him play this passively.
