That's crazy. It seems that if that's the case, he wouldn't have skipped Montreal. Unless he wants to be 5th for some odd reason.
I don't think Fed is focused on rankings atm. He's been always smart with his scheduling. He tried to gain some points by playing two smaller  tournaments on clay after W. I actually think that it was more about testing his new racquet than points but I'm not sure.

The problem is we might have that situation again .... Murray, Rafa and Fed on one side of the draw and Nole on the other one. Or, we might have Nole, Rafa and Fed on one side and Murray on the other one ... Ferrer, unfortunately is a non factor at slams. He can def. anyone but when he bumps in one of the big 4 he is toasted. Everyone knows it.

I also think he's an idiot for trying out a new racket. He's been using the same racket for, what, 15 years? And now he thinks it's a good idea to randomly switch rackets? That makes no sense whatsoever to me.

Yeah, Ferrer's definitely a non factor. Really, the only slam he's relevant in and has a chance of beating one of the big 4 is the French.

Rafa is the FIRST to qualify for WTF this year! :D

Will Federer be seeded number 5 for the US Open? I dont remember how Ferrer did at cinci last year.

Either 5, 6 or 7. He can be passed by Berdych and Del Potro.

To stay ahead of Berdych he needs to either 1) reach the final and have Berdych lose the QF, or 2) win the title if Berdych reaches the SF.

To stay ahead of Del Potro he needs to match DelPo's result - he can't afford to lose in the QF if DelPo reaches the SF.

Too bad he ain't getting it. He's losing tonight :D Looks like he'll be 7 since Del Po made it to the semis.

Tommy could be tough one to beat at USO, considering he's finally withdrawn from Winston Salem.
There was never point in risking that shoulder again, just a week before USO.

Last year he had hellish draws at slams and now when seeded, he can do some damage.

Also very curious to see what Wawrinka will do. He had an incredible half season and now completely off the radar.

Fed with this game has a great shot actually. From being completely out of the picture, his best buddy Tommy gave him his confidence and tennis back. So it will be interesting to see if he can keep this level up.

Federer played INFINITELY better tonight than he has recently, so he's back in the conversation for this title! But I'd say after how the events have gone recently, Rafa would have to be the favorite.

If Nadal wins Cincy, he becomes the 4th player since 1995 to win Canada and Cincy in the same year-
Agassi 1995 (lost the US Open final to Sampras)
Rafter 1998 (won the US Open)
Roddick 2003 (won the US Open)

“It is not too far way,” Toni Nadal told The Australian after Nadal collected the 13th major of his career by mowing down Novak Djokovic in an electrifying final of the US Open. “It is getting very, very close for Rafa to be level with Roger or more.”

He is certainly smackin' the snot outta the ball on the FH wing.
His deceptive serve continues to be an effective set-up shot.
He continues to play well at the regulation pace of 20 secs between points.
Certainly a bit more enjoyable to watch from my perspective. :)
CONK da ball!!!

You forgot Pat Rafter, who did it in 1998 - and won the USO.

Dang it, Litotes beat me to the punch! I was gonna mention Rafter as well. Yeah, Rafa is doing a good job of keeping the time at regulation. He still gets time violations here and there, but continues to show off his mental toughness by not being affected by them (I think he's won the next point every time he's gotten one, many times with an ace) while others like Nole seem to get a little rattled when they happen.

Rafa is the FIRST to qualify for WTF this year! :D

Hewitt sure can take the piss out of a player if they're not on top of their game.  Apparently DPot still has some work to do in the fitness department and perhaps the wrist isn't as fully healed as we were led to believe.  Or so the chatterboxes were saying during the match......
