American Men: You are now on the clock!
« on: July 07, 2013, 03:45:37 PM »
While Murray's win today ends a 77 year drought for British men at Wimbledon, 2013 US Open will mark the 10th anniversary of Andy Roddick's only major title and the last for American men.

Bab's pick to return glory to Old Glory is...

Jack Sock

6'1"
20 years old
Big game righty with the best backhand the US has produced since Andre Agassi. That's not saying much :)

Has a better head about him than Harrison.

Already owns a grand slam trophy, 2011 US Open md with Melanie Oudin.

It could be quite a wait as it will take any of these up and comers awhile to mature.

That's why my pick is Sock. By the time he's matured, Murray and Djokovic will be 31, Fed and likely Rafa will be gone. As will Berdych, Tsonga, et. al.

We're looking at Dimitrov and Janowicz.

Future is bright. :)

Sock kinda reminds me of Roddick, although I did watch only one match when he faced Haas.

Good game, and great potential for murika.

The other kid on my watchlist is

Denis Kudla
5'11"
also 20

To be honest, I don't know anything about this kid but I have seen his name pop-up every now and then and I hear he's got some talent. I wouldn't elevate him above Harrison, and he's not one I would consider likely to win a major. I'm just curious about this kid.

I really like Sock. He's a lot of fun to watch. Basically like Roddick 2.0. Hopefully he doesn't fall into the same trap and desert his aggression.

Rafa is the FIRST to qualify for WTF this year! :D

Very similar, true, but I'd say better BH, better hands, and more athletic.

Sock won the Winetka Challenger this weekend.

Now he's #84 and has earned a direct entry into the US Open :applause:

I tuned in at 4-4 in the 3rd set, just in time to watch the kid cramp from his arm to his hip to his calf. 2:30 hours in the heat, on grass, of his ATP debut!
:applause:

That being said, based on 2 games during which he was cramping, he looks like another smallish 2HBH baseliner  :\

Humidity at over 70% again today.
Temps in over 100 in the sun.
Not sure how those guys do it.
I'll take -5F and a stiff breeze over this crappy weather anyday.

This kid, 15 y/o American Stefan Kozlov, took #113 the distance. Cramping at the 2:30 mark did him in.

He's already 5'10" at 15. He'll probably end up 6'2-6'4" by the time he's done growing. Another Robin Soderling?
Then we will fight in the shade.

Cilic isn't American...

Querrey has been on a downward spiral worthy of Isner. Lost again today *facepalm* At least it was to another American.

Jack Sock won really easily today. 6-2, then the dude retired. He only lost 1 point on his first serve.

At least we own the Doubles World. The Bryan Bros are on their way to their first Calendar Year Grand Slam! Would this be the first ever accomplished by a doubles team?

Sock, Harrison, and Kudla all there.

And now they're all out...Sock the only one to win a match....by retirement. If the US is to score a good result in Newport, it will come from Isner, Ram, Smyczek, Russell or Al. Kuznetsov. The two last ones are playing right now, 1st set to Russell.
