Murray and Djokovic Killed Tennis
« on: July 07, 2013, 09:29:51 PM »
Tennis has experienced this before, but y'alls weren't even around to see it. In the 1980s, one man single-handedly crippled the sport: Ivan Lendl. Wow, people hated him and his robotic personality and baseline game. Tennis's problem was he dominated the tour.

Back in February, I was saying that Murray and Djokovic can't generate any interest. Today, they proved they can't generate any interest. The irony is, in Murray and Djokovic, we have 2 dominant players with games that epitomize what's great about the sport during its New Golden Age, tennis's greatest ever. I think 4 characteristics best describe what's great about the sport today: (1) 20-35 shot rallies, (2) defense, (3) athleticism, and (4) super human fitness. This is what people want. And yet, when the best of the best of them get together, it doesn't capture most's fancy.

This was Wimbledon and no one cared about it's final. The semis were much more anticipated and drew far more interest.

(I know someone is going to say something like, "What are you talking about? British television is reporting that every match Murray played broke records!")  :laugh-bounce:

The semis were the best and I enjoyed them a great deal.

The final was good and anticlimatic but after it was over.

$63K for a nosebleed in Andy's backyard to witness British history, but did they even fill the house in New York?  ;-()
(No.)

Federer-Nadal were an overnight sensation. They were huge even before Rafa won a major outside of RG.

Djokovic and Murray have been knocking on the door and playing in finals forever. Now they own the sport. They actually are the beneficiaries of the "goodwill" Fed and Rafa created. But these 2 can't capitalize on the success of their predecessors.

Globally, these players don't hold sport interest. They are not dominate commercially. In that list of the top paid athletes in endorsement - I don't think neither Murray or Novak was anywhere near the top - or if they even made the list. Whereas Roger was 2nd barely behind Tiger Woods. Maybe it'll change for Murray and Novak but right now, outside of die hard tennis fans - not a lot of people really know them.

nadal was the ultimate fearless warrior of the sport and roger was one of the greatest ever to play the game.

their matches would stop people from playing golf right in their tracks at golf country clubs around the world. they all wanted to see roger and rafa.

it was also 2 opposing styles of play: high percentage tennis vs attacking all court tennis.

and both could move like the wind.

Endorcement $$$$

Pirate vs Nobility

Makes me think for the first time the magnitude of the impact Andre "Image is Everything" Agassi had on the sport. So many kids from around the world say that he was their favorite player. Sampras alone would have left the sport in purgatory.

McEnroe<>Lendl, but Lendl's dominance was bad for tennis.

Sampras<>Agassi, returned the sport to its glory days

Federer<>Nadal, tennis reached higher heights

Murray=Djokovic...uh wut?  ;;)

Well what tennis needs is another Federeresque player, a consistent injury-free Haas type etc who can compete with these super-athletic guys. I admit that I enjoyed those super long rallies in the beginning but its attractiveness has waned for me to the point yesterday I was switching between channels only to see the score after the first set. When I saw Dimitrov first play Nadal in Rotterdam I thought he'll be the next one but he too is playing to his weaknesses rather than the contrary; he wants to beat Nadal/Djokovic at their own games, he stands so far back.
I think tennis has peaked and will be so for the next few years until Nadal retires (because Fed would have already retired) and then become the period where the likes of Hewitt, Johansson were winning slams until another saviour comes.
The world awaits no genius

I admit, for a while there, I too thought those crazy long, long nights in Melbourne were truly epic. But by 2012, man, I was done with that 5 hour crap.

I didn't much care for Federer most of his career. But by 2012, I went through a sea-change. I realized he's been the one guy *thinking* of ways to shorten points. My appreciation for Roger has grown considerably over the past year or so.

What do you people want? Babs, you tell me about your ideal world of tennis. What? You want Almagro and Seppi to dominate? How? because you like them. and somehow, Djokovic and Murray are 'destroying tennis'.

bigger, deeper, more 'Anglo Saxon' or 'more colored players', slower courts, faster courts, S&V, limit matches to 3 hours, fix Nole's chin, fix Murray's teeth, Make Federina 10 years younger, fix Rafa's knees ... like give me a break.

Oh, no more Fedal, uh oh ... the ugliest match up in tennis history ... but hey we are nostalgic...

Oh, I had a six pack 10 years ago, I don't have it any more and I don't care. There is also some hair growing up in my nose and my ears ... yeah, life sucks, deal with it   :farmer:

I ask everyone here 'What do you want to see?', 'What would make you happy?' ... WHAT?

the thing is, in Nole-Murray match up, you can't get to see any new things..they just rally till death ..coming to net is almost extinct & this is the reason why i enjoyed fed-stakhovsky so much..same goes for haas's attacking gameplay..attacking tennis is much more enjoyable in my opinion..
I wouldn't go to the extent of saying they killed the tennis..thats too much for me to say..I've enjoyed some of their previous match ups a lot..

Some of the blame goes to the courts well..there is very little difference between today's courts ( hard-clay-grass )..they seem all so alike..i can't remember a match on grass which had so many long rallies.

in short, i find the lack of variety in today's tennis a bit disturbing.
You can ignore reality, but you can't ignore the consequences of ignoring reality.

Novak is not killing tennis. His flexibility and defense is fun to watch, and his whippy groundstroke swings look good. He is fairly aggressive, and has a fun personality as shown in interviews

Murray on the other hand  :ZZZZZ)  He is a clever player, but his groundstrokes are not particularily special or attractive. He moves fast, but not uniquely sliding like Nole. He hardly ever comes to net. His personality is mostly swearing on court, shy off-court. Murray is killing tennis, from a large perspective.

mtf has ruined your life captain orange wombat.

now you see the world through the mtf colored glasses.

that is just a small sample size old sport. small sample of  hapless, clueless, gutless, assless, spineless, toothless, and legless hate infested rats who don't know crap from shore polish.

the sport is at highest level ever. this is the golden age of tennis.

only thing missing is roger and nadal. well roger is getting old and nadal is too busy jacking off with his poker, golf, fishing, and hanging out with his soccer superstar buddies so what can you do.

these 2 have to get their stuff together but the reality is that they will start to play less and less at the current rate.
