Interesting Sir Slasher Marv. :)

Does anyone know the record for continuous longevity in the top 10 (since 1973)?

Respectfully,
masterclass
It's Rafa I think ... forever #2, behind roger etc.

Not yet... :)

It's Jimmy Connors.  16 straight years in the top 10 (1973-1988), 17 in the top 20 (1973-1989).
Ivan Lendl had 13 straight years in the top 10 (1980-1992), 15 in the top 20 (1979-1993).
Pete Sampras had 12 straight years in the top 10 (1990-2001), 13 in the top 20 (1990-2002).

Andre Agassi had a total of 16 years in the top 10, but not consecutively. He fell out of the top 20 in 1993 and 1997. (1988-1992), (1994-1996), (1998-2005)

Among active players:
Roger Federer has 11 straight years (2002-2012) in the top 10 and 10 in the top 3.
Rafael Nadal has 8 straight years (2005-2012) in the top 10 and also top 4.

Respectfully,
masterclass

Jimmy Connors has the record - 788 straight weeks from (week beginning) 27/8-1973 to (week beginning) 26/9-88.
Ivan Lendl is second. His numbers are not verified, I do not know exactly when he entered, but an estimation gives him 626 weeks from 19/5-80 to 11/5-92
Pete Sampras is 3rd on 565 weeks, 10/9-90 - 2/7-01
Roger Federer is 4th, and will become 3rd very soon, currently on 562 weeks, 14/10-02 - today
Stefan Edberg is 5th on 493 weeks, 9/9-85 - 13/2-95
....
Rafael Nadal is 8th on 430 weeks.

You're welcome :) I have actually worked quite a bit on this stat, not only top-10 but all the top-x and top-xx's. I am still missing information about rankings in the 70s and early 80s which I hope to get eventually.

Hello folks!

I started writing a sports blog last week, here's my thoughts about doping:

http://augustonsports.blogspot.fi/2013/07/some-thoughts-about-doping.html

Great start for your blog August!  I tried to respond with a long comment in the blog, but when I tried to enter it, I lost my whole comment.  Oh well.
I'm too tired to write it again.

I'll sum up my position briefly. Until the various sport organizations are out of the management of drug testing business, I have zero confidence in their testing integrity. It is blatantly obvious an inherent conflict of interest will exist in this situation when the organizations responsible for marketing, promoting, and organizing the sport are also in charge of management of drug testing.  Too much money, prestige, and notoriety is at stake to believe they would take down a top player.

If I were in charge of the UCI or ITF or whatever, I would refuse to accept responsibility for management of testing as it would be natural for anyone to question my and my organization's integrity, right or wrong.  The responsibility should be given to an independent agency.

The way testing in tennis is being managed today is a joke. Only an idiot would be caught.  Most serious doping is done off season or when they are Out Of Competition for whatever reason, but guess what? In tennis that is when the fewest tests are done, only 15% (334 urine and blood OOC out of 2135 in 2012, only 63 Out Of Competition blood tests in 2012, only 21 in 2011), with many top players not tested at all OOC, such as Serena Williams in 2010-2011.  Micro-dosing of synthetic testosterone (a steroid hormone) can also be used in-competition and fall under the levels required to be caught, because of the testing methods used (T/E ratio instead of CIR).

Even if an independent agency were doing all the right things it would be difficult to catch the sophisticated doper immediately, because many times they are using the latest designer drug for which no test exists.  But if the samples are being taken, they can be stored for later testing, and as long as retesting on old samples would be done periodically, then there is always a chance that a test will be developed which will catch the doper later.

As we've seen with Armstrong and his cohorts, UCI testing was ineffective, but other means of investigation (USADA) proved more fruitful.

Respectfully,
masterclass

Missed today but have Fed, Haas, Janowicz, Gulbis, Paire and others tomorrow.
Should be good.

Just so strange to see clay around this time.

I can hardly wait till DelPo gets playing again.
He's around the 2009 level right now and at that time he was improving from RG 2009 to near the end of the year.

The last part of the puzzle was his endurance that year and was at top level at the USO.

If his endurance was better at RG 2009 he may have been very well the RG champ too.
Some may remember he ran out of gas against Federer in the fifth set, a semi finals match there.

You know that Fed changed his tennis racquet for this tournament, so eveyone is waiting to see if it makes a difference. It's bigger than the one he's used for years.

is changing a new racket do Roger good?  It would be hard to adapt to at this "old" age?  :confused1:

Old?   :)>>>>

joking.

It may cause problems, eveyone is looking at it positively but other players have had problems while changing rackets. Not always turn out good...  it does.
