This court + match up forces Rafa to stand closer to the baseline and John to blast FH past him. Just don't see that when Rafa plays the Backboard Boys.

...or maybe it's just that John wants to hit winners and Nole and Andy don't. Probably a lot of this.

Nadal is thumpin' the crap out of that FH! :scared:
And the wheels look to be ok at this point.
Isner better keep the points short in the final if he has any hope of winning.

I haven't read all the preceeding but Monstertruck :big boss: says it all.
It was a good but not great final. Isner was mostly serving well and had some nice approaches to the net but Rafa outdid him in his own serves and his general wear-them-out ground game. I was reminded of the hard work that Mertov observed in the Nadal practice session. Thus, he never gives up and runs down everything.  :lmao:

The critical moment in the match came in the middle of second set when Nadal was given a time warning
and Isner had a break opportunity. If he'd won it, John could have avoided the second set tie-break. I thought that the Isner game declined perceptively after that.  :(

I will probably not go back for the ladies final. I need to get the car ready for the trip home tomorrow. I like to leave early so as to get past Columbus before the rush hour.

It has been a good week. Nadal has never done well at Cincy before, losing to people like Baghdatis and Djokovic and it is the first time I have seen him play really well on hard courts. I did see him at Monte Carlo a couple of years ago but that was clay and it was no surprise to see him come up to expectations there.

Well said! Pants are not for the faint-hearted.

Hats off to Big John. The Cincy final and the Montreal final were absolute opposites. Both are huge servers but Isner is the absolute opposite to Raonic in other aspects of the game. Nadal destroys you if you only have a big serve. Isner had the big forehand to back it up, and very good court movement. Isner also was mentally strong. Some may think Isner wasn't mentally strong, because he lost 2 tie-breakers....but I believe it was more about Nadal being absurdly strong. I mean, Isner did enough to win that 1st set tie-breaker if the opponent was Djokovic/Murray.

Great final! Isner was serving even better than usual and never faced a break point. But Nadal was too good. He weathered the storm and held his own until the tiebreaks, where he was ready to pounce. On the other hand, a lot of good can be taken from this match for Isner. If he plays like that in the USO and doesn't have a douchebag of a draw, he should make it pretty deep!

Rafa is the FIRST to qualify for WTF this year! :D

Firstly, congratulations to Nadal & his fans.  Yet another perfect return from injury this year, and unbeaten on hard courts thus far. Outstanding stuff.

Next Isner. It is rewarding to watch a player grow in confidence, and to see their game develop & unfold. I've enjoyed his tennis of late, and this performance, after an emotionally & physically taxing match in the SF's, was excellent.  He took the best player in the world to 2 tb's, and the first tb in particular could have gone either way.  He'll know that he can take the fight to anyone after this match & I shall be interested to see how he does at the USO.

Finally, the cycle is unending. With Djokovic / Murray looking somewhat vulnerable at present, and none of the other hopefuls consistent enough to be a real threat, Nadal will no doubt want to make hay whilst the sun shines.  The question is less about who will win the USO, but who can stop Nadal.  Let's see.
Carpe Diem

It will be fascinating to see Nadal vs Murray. Murray has had major problems with the less aggressive version of Nadal (2011). Nadal beat Murray at 2010 Wimbledon, 2011 Roland Garros, 2011 Wimbledon, 2011 US Open, and none of those went to 5 sets. So how will Murray handle the newly aggressive version of Nadal? I know they say Murray has improved hardcore....but he sure didn't look improved at this year's Australian Open final. Murray won Wimbledon, but I think Roland Garros took a lot out of Djokovic.

If Murray seems to be handling the more aggressive version of Nadal, Rafa would be more than happy to use his grinding style of play instead. He did at the French, and he's always been good at editing his style of play even midmatch to suit his opponent.

Yep, if Nadal is going to be aggressive vs Murray he better make sure he keeps the unforced errors down, because Murray is really good at simply keeping he ball in play for as long as it takes for the opponent to screw-up. Either way, its good that Nadal has even more versatility in his game now than ever. Also vs Federer, generally Nadal doesn't try to smash Federer off the court. He seemed to try it at Cincy however, and Federer enjoyed it, until late in the 2nd set. Regardless of whether it helps or hinders him vs Murray/Federer, Nadal's 2013 aggression was definitely necessary in the Djokovic matchup. Nadal had 22 winners in the 5th set of their Roland Garros semi. That was the only way to put that match to bed. 2010 US Open, Nadal was also very aggressive.

Yup. He has to be aggressive if he wants to beat Nole. That's why he beat him relatively easily at the 2010 USO final. Nadal was serving better than ever and hitting the ball off the forehand AND backhand so well. Now he seems more content to use mostly the FH to be aggressive, and only hits aggressive BHs every now and then. But it's working for him, so no complaints here!

Congrats to Nadal and his fans. He is definitely the favorite to win the US open -- by far. No one else is playing on his level right now.

On the women - congrats to Victoria! I like both her and Serena so it was a win-win for me! Serena looked a little tired but I think she'll be ok for the Open too!
