Can Nadal Take His First WTF This Year?
« on: September 06, 2013, 11:35:54 AM »
With the semifinals of the US Open closing in, Nadal is by far the best hard court player of this year. Murray has gone out before the semis of every hard court event he's played in this summer, and has looked rather substandard since his Wimbledon victory. Nole has also been on the lackluster side this summer, losing early in both Montreal and Cincy (one of those losses coming to none other than Nadal himself). And Federer has had a pretty poor year all around. These would always be the main hurdles for Nadal to overcome because of their more capable hard court games. But this year, Nadal has shaped his game around the hard courts and proven himself to be extremely capable on them. With the others being vulnerable and Nadal looking stronger than ever, can he finally overcome one of the major obstacles of his career?

Rafa is the FIRST to qualify for WTF this year! :D

Sure, why not? Federer has been the one to stand in his way many times, he has beaten everyone else there, and Fed is not looking like a title candidate atm.

Its obvious that Nadal can win the WTF. In 2010 he made the FINAL of the WTF and took a set from Federer. Clearly Nadal's best hardcourt tennis (which he now is playing) can win the WTF. In 2010 WTF he beat Djokovic and Murray.
“It is not too far way,” Toni Nadal told The Australian after Nadal collected the 13th major of his career by mowing down Novak Djokovic in an electrifying final of the US Open. “It is getting very, very close for Rafa to be level with Roger or more.”

negative.

its not happening and it doesn't matter anyway.
not for the clay warrior. he needs his health and he needs to be ready for 2014. that is more important than to wreck the knees on indoor hard courts.

let nole, andy, and roger fight for WTF.

General, are you expecting him not to play? Or just not to do well?

I think he will fail there as usual.

a. its his worst surface

b. he still has knee issues

c. he is playing somewhere in china and he is playing in basel. he is playing davis cup right after the u.s. open.

d. he is probably going to play in paris on the hard courts

translation: how much longer c an he keep this crap up before he is injured again.

either that or he will be too spent physically and mentally to do well at WTF.

he is just one man general. how much can one man win?

has he not won enough this year?

Not sure he should even bother. Time off doesn't seem to hurt him.

I'd take a pass and get ready for #14 > 1 WTF

The thing is, I don't think the knee issues really exist anymore. One, he isn't wearing bandages around his knees for like the first time ever. Plus, the announcer asked about his knees after one of his matches, and he completely blew the question off.

Rafa is the FIRST to qualify for WTF this year! :D

But they are always at risk.

Can he clinch YE #1 before WTF?

Sure he can. He's more than 3000 points ahead of Djokovic in the race. If he loses no more than 1500 in the events leading up to WTF, he's safe for YE#1. And that's not an overly ambitious scenario imo.

I would start calling the dogs off now.

no need for greed.

slams is where its at anyway. especially for him.

showing up ultra healthy, hungry, and fit for 2014 should be the key goal now.

why push your luck. next 7 month layoff will surely stop all this progress and may even end his career.

Yep. That's what I think, too.

One tournament won't hurt Nadal at all.

He just played the two masters and USO on hards, no problems.

His knee problems have come during or after natural surface play as much as hard courts.

Of course Nadal has a chance to win the WTF, but it isn't likely! He's traditionally lost his edge after the USO and in one of the WTF tourneys a couple years ago, lost all 3 of his RR matches! He's made one final and for someone's thought to be the future GOAT, that's embarrassing! This is Nole's last chance to salvage a dismal season after starting out hot with another Aussie Open championship! He hasn't won anything since defeating Rafa in Monte Carlo! Most players would give up a lung to have his season, but for him it's been a colossol failure so far!  :confused1:

Djokovic is looking better and now DelPo can take him out, chances are dropping.
