I'm interested to see what he does this indoor season. That aside, I'm thinking grass remains his best chance. After all, he's tied with Pete at 7 so I'd think he'd try to peak at Wimbledon.

I just wonder what portion of his decline is mental. he low on confidence.

additionally part of this decline is due to his absolute refusal to change his game.

he is not willing to engage them in battle longer. his points are too quick.

It's like he is going for broke. he could try grinding it out more.

high risk tennis is ok if it is working out.

now is the time is play a bit more high percentage tennis.

I don't think he can.  I believe the field is too strong and these days he seems to be too streaky from one match to the next.  I hope I am wrong I would love to see him snag another.

If he is going to pull it off the draw really needs to open up and he would probably only have to play one of the top players.

Time will tell.
Good Luck on the Court!!!

Why do you wonder 'what portion of his decline is mental'?, as if the mental and the physical could be argued over as if they were part of some ideological struggle.
It's just getting old, you win less. It isn't something that's solvable by a strategy change-if it were, guys wouldn't peak in their mid to late thirties.

This is pretty much it..... He's just gotten old. You win less because you have less consistency day to day. Plus it's harder to recover after a match and play the next day.
Yes he he can win, but it gets less and less likely.
I also think his chance to win on grass went when they replaced the old grass with rhy and use slower balls. They've made Wimbledon slower. It's more like clay now, so I'd say the US Open is his best shot, however slim.
7 matches playing at your best is a tough ask for someone his age.
Many will ask, well how does Serena do it?
I think Serena is just that much better than the field on the women's tour. No one can match her in speed or athleticism still, even though she is slower than where she started. The competition was closer to Federer than it was, or is to Serena.

grass is grass.

if it was "more like clay" then explain nadal`s 2 losses there the last 2 years.

nadal has made at least 5 finals at wimby. sure he would have won at least 4 of them if it was "more like clay".

DMast is right.
The grass and the balls both changed at Wimby in order to slow the game down.
Yeah, it's still grass, but it doesn't play like the grass of old.

Nadal has shown he is able to adapt to different surfaces.
He may well have found success on the 'fast' grass.

I think Fed may have his best shot at the Australian Open.
Well rested and prepared, he may be able to squeak out 7 quality matches.
With a bit of help from the field, someone else could take out Nadal & Nole giving Fed a patsy in the final.
I think the U.S. Open is too late in the year for Fed, but that would be my second choice.

And yes, he is getting older by the day.
Practice is just a bit harder to get up for.
Money in the bank and trophy shelf full weaken the hunger to win.
Confindence flagging from repeated beat downs from Nadal.
Daughters and wife beckoning him to join them on life's journey without tennis.
CONK da ball!!!

I don't think that he can. Sure, he could hit a high point where we see the old Federer and he can beat anyone. But he just can't do it for 2 or 3 consecutive matches like he'd need to in order to win a slam.

Rafa is the FIRST to qualify for WTF this year! :D

Hasn't Serena had more time off in her career, giving her a younger tennis body so to speak?  Plus she is just so much better.

She's the Tommy Haas of the WTA in that regard. ..-)

serena was lucky in some ways too:

she does not face the competition that men face on the atp tour.

she also serves like men so that helps.

I think she and Venus have the liveliest arms on the WTA.
Perhaps even looser than some of the men. :scared:

Yeah, I'm not sure if you can teach a 'live' arm or not.

I do think Nadal's serve is underrated.
He is very crafty.

Someone reported that Serena (at 32 years old) has played a little over 600 matches in her career.  Federer (at 32 years old) has played over 1,000+ matches.  That's a big difference.

Yeah, that's almost twice as many matches. ;-()
Perhaps a more accurate comparison would be the number of sets each has played seeing as the men play best of 5 on occasion.

In addition the effort that men put into their strokes, and the running that men do, more like digging to go after a ball, is more than in the women's game as well.
All good reasons Serena is still dominate at 32, while Federer appears to be on the downside of his career at the same age.

and on top of that, women never have to play any best of 5 sets matches.

still bottom line is that serena is just too damn good.

and she does not have the competition men have so she looks 100 times more dominant.
