Fifth seed Jerzy Janowicz defeated Portuguese rising star Joao Sousa 6-2, 7-5 on Thursday to reach the Valencia Open 500 quarter-finals. The 22-year-old Pole hit 13 aces and won 76 per cent of his service points as he clinched victory in 73 minutes.
Janowicz has been limited in his schedule since a run to the Wimbledon semi-finals (l. to Murray), having struggled with an arm and back injury. Jeremy Chardy reached his fourth tour-level quarter-final of the season as he upset fourth seed John Isner 7-6(7), 6-3. The Frenchman managed to out-ace Isner 17-12 and break the American twice to claim victory in 82 minutes. The 26-year-old Chardy, a quarter-finalist at the Australian Open in January (l. to Murray), improved to a 22-23 match record on the season and goes on to face Russia’s Dmitry Tursunov.
Jarkko Nieminen defeated qualifier Alejandro Falla 6-3, 6-3 in 67 minutes. The Finn was a finalist at the Power Horse Cup in Dusseldorf (l. to Monaco) in May and has a 31-25 match record on the season. Nieminen next will face Mikhail Youzhny, who defeated Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-4, 6-3.
