Paul Anacone: could he be taking a poke at Roger?
« on: March 12, 2014, 02:37:26 PM »
Anacone, of course, wants his charge to attack. He says, my player will come back to me dismissive and say, "I chipped and charged 4 times and lost all 4 points." Anacone says, "I have to remind them not to look at them as individual points but rather how they fit into the big picture."

(that's not a direct quote, but that's the gist of what he said.)

Paul Anacone: could he be talking smack about Roger?

He's old school! That's how they did it. I don't think players can do it all the time now. It'll work occasionally but not like they did it when the courts were fast! The courts are too slow now.

But he's not saying that. He's saying that today's players panic if there aren't immediate results and return too quickly to their comfort zone not wanting to consider that a different tactic will pay dividends down the road.

Roger has won some huge matches of late coming forward, and did you notice who's in his box now?!

I guess Rogi would just as soon grab his ankles and cry a river again the next time he plays Raf.  Heaven forbid you try something different.  Meh!

Roger just cries "uncle" when he sees his Father Rafa across the net.
Then we will fight in the shade.

When Roger sees Father Rafa across the net a yellow puddle suddenly appears under him.
Then we will fight in the shade.

It's sad to see that rushing to the net will cause you more trouble than success.
Sure you can win some points with that tactics and maybe some matches but on a long run it's destined for failure, unfortunately. Especially if you have have spinners on the other side such as Nadalito.

So whenever I feel nostalgic and wanna enjoy some real tennis I just play Edbeg-Becker VHS tapes from the late 80's and 90's.

I like your optimism but let's face it. Many good volleyers suffered tremendously due to court homogenization and rackets. Even balls!

For example it is so refreshing and good to see old Benny getting to the quartes of Masters here but let's take a look at his opponents.
All except his easy 1st round qualifier opponent play aggressive tennis and not with heavy top spin with also a guy like Lopez who still uses his S&V style. But ultimately more one-dimesnional player than someone who relies on his variety. Rest is Tsonga with flat shots and great at net. And there's Thiem with solid all around play but leaning more towards aggressive players.
Against all these opponents it was safe to say that his gamestyle is more plausible for victory.

So to prove that S&V still exsist in todays game he''ll have to face his best challenge yet to beat Djokovic even though Djokovic is nowhere near the best passing players such as Murray, Nadal etc...

But yeah gl to Benny!

This is like Dallas's argument.

Anacone isn't trying to turn an apple into an orange. He just wants his charge to stick with the game plan when the game plan is to mix in some chip and charge in certain situations throughout the match. If the player loses four points, Anacone says "That's OK, stick to the game plan," but says his players   will just scrap the game plan.

True that. Not sure if that applies to Roger but I've seen many players disregarding' initial gameplan(change of tactics)

That's exactly the reason why I'll always believe some huge servers are such cowards.
Especially Raonic. Ever since Ljubicic started coaching him they pointed out at some changes regarding his net game, how Ljubo wanted more Raonic focusing on S&V.
For **** sakes he's already got that massive serve and he's still way too shy to go to the net. On a second serve he'll crawl like a guilty puppy hoping his passive game will bring him some free UE's points.
