Safin loses again - Hopman Cup
« on: January 05, 2005, 02:40:26 PM »
I am very suprised that Safin went down to Coria in straight sets.  Is his heart in the Hopman Cup?  He is runnign out of time to get his act together for the AO.  I would of thought that if anything the Hopman Cup could of been used to build some confidence going into the AO.

Depends, was this match on clay?  He is not bad, but he is no Safin...  I think Safin should beat him almost every time...

2004 Tennis Masters Cup, Hard, RR
Houston, TX, USA Hard RR Safin 6 1   6 4

2004 Monte Carlo AMS, Clay, S
Monaco Clay S Coria 4 6   6 1   3 6

Safin has beaten him once on hardcourt and lost to him (not so badly) on clay.  He just got spanked by him on hard court.  Not a good day at the office for MS.
Good Luck on the Court!!!

At the moment I have to go with Fed.  But if DK was here maybe he could persuade me differently.  :)

Fed is just so dang good.   :worthy:

I've never been impressed with Coria, but regardless, Safin should have won. But we all know how capricious Safin is -- one match (or tournament, even) he's playing brilliant tennis and the next it seems like he doesn't give a rat's ass. But keeping his 04 AO run in mind, he can still do well regardless of his form now.

Welcome back, BBB!

A guy I was playing with today said Safin had been partying too hard lately.  I'll give him the Aussie before I start worrying.  All it takes is one decent match and he'll be back.

I saw Coria practice once and that little billy goat hits a pretty nasty ball.  He can't open up and unleash like the bigger guys, but every ball has purpose.  He's a machine.

BBB---

I am pumped you are back!!!!!!!!!!  I had to hunt you down, I assume you saw my trails.

I agree that the AO will tell the true story of Safin to start the year, but I assume he wanted a better start headed in.
Good Luck on the Court!!!

Think Coria is one of the best players around..
Anyone remember the Final at the Nasdaq 100 against Roddick (Coria retired injured), or the final in Hamburg against Fed (Coria´s first tournament after the injury in Miami)
Also got to the final at that grass tourney in Holland (tough name s´hertoghensbosch or some like that)
I believe he is up there with Safin, Moya, Hewitt, Henman, Nalbandian; like all this guys a step behind Fed.
Remember that at Houston it was his first tournament after shoulder surgery.
Not bad for a 5.10ft 165lbs. who doesn´t take any kind of vitamins after what the Atp did to him when he was accused of doping (same substance that a couple of years later got Ulhirach banned and the ATP took full responsibility for that)
He missed all the slams besides Paris where he got to the final

After watching Safin destroy Coria at the Masters, I was surprised at the result. As for height I think he is more like 5'6".

Haas was *up* as set, retired at 7-5 2-3.

I'm still not sure about Coria, but I do expect him to go further in Melbourne than he did last year.

I don't like Coria.  Never have and never will.  At least he got rid of that stupid bowl-like haircut.
