Federer sets up Ljubicic showdown

Top seed Roger Federer strolled into the final of the Qatar Open in Doha with a 6-3 6-4 victory over eighth- seeded Russian Nikolay Davydenko.
The Swiss star will meet sixth seed Ivan Ljubicic, who reached his second straight Qatar final with a 6-3 7-6 win over Spain's Albert Costa.

"I felt I still could have played better," said Federer.

"But the most satisfying thing is that I haven't dropped serve so far. I'm happy to be in the final."
Good Luck on the Court!!!

I think a win at this tournament would give Roger a great deal of confidence heading into the first of the year, despite the fact he didnt have to beat any of the big guns.

Yeah, I believe that is a record he holds now for consecutive finals.  I hope he keeps moving like a freight train through 2005.  I love watching history in the making...

Its incredible that he hasn't lost since the Olympics in August, but he's got to lose at some point.

He is like Sampras in his ability to hold serve whenever he needs to, even if his serve is not as enermously powerful as Sampras's, very powerful mind you, he is similar in his ability to hold serve constantly in key matches or any match he feels comfortable.

It is good to see him start his season sharp.   He tends to only get better as it goes.

Not only is his serve nice, but his groundies are better than Sampras' to back it up.  But he is usually on the baseline whereas Sampras could pull a huge second serve at will and serve and volley and still win the point.

I would like to see him serve and volley more.   He is very good volleyer, but in not comfortable coming in, except on his terms in points.  He should start practicing it, in some less important matches, or against weaker opposition, and build up to trying it against his tougher opposition in bigger matches.   Sampras had no choice since his groundies were not good enough to stay back on his serve, forehand potent but too erratic, backhand too fragile.

Sampras' groundies were not that bad, just not as solid as his dominating net game.

I would say Federer should serve and volley more to help him at Wimbledon, but, well, he seems to be doing fine there.

I agree but eventually a truly top notch serve and volleyer will come along, even if not a legend level like Sampras, somebody that will force Roger to be more willing to serve and volley himself.   I just think he just be getting more comfortable with it now before that happens.

We are fortunate enough to have witness a Legend in Samprass and a Legend in the making in Federer. When Sampras was in his prime, he was dominating the field. Federer, not even in his prime, is redifining the word "dominate" and when he's done, he'll redifine "Legend" also. Sampras is blessed with probably the best serve in tennis and he used it to its fullest. Without his serve, I don't think Sampras is the same person. You take away Federer's serve and he still beat you to a pulp.
I've been a tennis bum for half my life.
I'll just be a bum for the other half.

The most amazing thing about his serve is, IMO, the angles he can generate with it.  Not only wayyy wide on the deuce court, but he could get lefty-ish angles on the ad court, pulling his opponent wide to their backhands.  If only i could do that.

I'll go one further. Not only with serves, he finds angles on both forehands and backhands and any positions on the court. Makes you want to just worship him
