Aren't lefties the worst to play against?
« on: December 08, 2005, 10:49:51 AM »
I have a confession. I absolutely hate playing lefties. Being a lefty myself, I give my friends all kinds of grief.
The thing I hate most is when I run into a lefty that plays the same game as myself. I can't read them, at all!
There are no advantages when a left plays another lefty and there are too few of us so you can't really prepared
for a lefty. It might be an advantage when playing a righty, but it's a curse when facing another lefty.
I've been a tennis bum for half my life.
I'll just be a bum for the other half.

I have to agree that it is hard.  I played a leftie a while back in a doubles game.  He had a monstrous serve and it hopped the opposite way than everything ive been used to.  I didnt really notice his gameplay being any tougher because it was a doubles game anyways.  But yeah, serve was hard to get back.

Lefties rule!
Scott - I resemble that remark.
I was at this casino minding my own business, and this guy came up to me and said, "You're gonna have to move, you're blocking a fire exit." As though if there was a fire, I wasn't gonna run. If you're flammible and have legs, you are never blocking a fire exit.  - Mitch Hedberg

The best lefty I played had a nasty, McEnroe-like slice that kept moving me to cover it so that he could ace me up the T or out wide.

WICKED EVIL!!!!

I've returned serves from a tall righty, whose kicker changed direction and jammed me at or above my shoulder...Sheesh!

I don't mind THAT much, so long as I remember I'm playing a lefty.  I regularly play with two lefties right now, about once a week or two, and both have pretty weak backhands.  They can't pass of it and I reckon if I played a serious match against them I would just loop forehands crosscourt to their backhands all day long.  One guy can't handle slices to his forehand.  Actually, it's a bit of sample bias going on I guess because these two particular lefties have exploitable games.  I sort of think the advantage of being left handed is overstated in general.

Am I one of the two lefties?
Anyway, you guys haven't seen a true lefty serve until you've played my coach.
He hits the most wicked lefty "American twist". Facing an American twist is bad
enough, but a lefty one is just outright illegal.

I've only played with you twice in a year, so no.  These guys I play with once every week or two.  Inconsistent backhands.  Also, they both have one-handers.  Your backhand is much better than theirs.

Assuming this is TimD, I can play tomorrow/Saturday, but I'll be hung over.  3 or so at Westwood?

Tim, you are so right.....I played a former Arizona State lefty once and this guy had the most wicked American twist I've ever seen.  I looked like a beginner trying to figure out where it was going to bounce to so I could return it.

As a left hander, I can personally say that there are advantages to being a lefty b/c it is a really strong intimidation factor. I can also hit some "unusaul" angles on my serve and strokes. compliments to my aces...

The only time a lefty has given me trouble is when they were a very effective server, but the same can be said about a righty. I don't think there are really that many advantages to being a left hander I think that's more myth than anything else.
I agree.
