Sydney Tournament

(1/2) > >>

Thought I would start a thread on this tournament.   Some interesting results in the first round.

Lleyton Hewitt (1) def. Karol Beck 6-1, 6-2
Radek Stepanek def. Carlos Moya (2) 2-6, 6-4, 6-2
Joachim Johansson (3) def. Greg Rusedski 6-4, 6-3
Andrei Pavel (4) def. Luke Bourgeois 7-6 (7-3), 7-5
Ivo Minar def. Nikolay Davydenko (6) 6-2, 3-6, 6-2
Taylor Dent (8) def. Santiago Ventura 7-5, 7-6 (9-7)
Igor Andreev def. Albert Costa 6-1, 6-4
Arnaud Clement def. Tomas Zib 6-1, 6-3
Michael Llodra def. Xavier Malisse 4-6, 6-0, 6-3

I was suprised to see Moya lose, he just won a tournament this last week.  Nice win for JJ.  Dent still on a roll and Hewitt took out some agression on a poor soul.

As long as Rusedski lost, I am happy.  Once again, Moya shows his consistency.

Moya's very consistent usually.  Who else can remain at the top for several years without even getting to a slam semi?

I think this was probably more to do with tiredness, having won in Chennai on Sunday.   Quite a quick turnaround to have to make.

I see Ferrero lost in Auckland to Jan Hernych, that's more worrying imo.  Mind you he crashed in Sydney at the same stage last year, and still went on to reach the AO semis.  Wouldn't bet on it happening this year.

Moya has not been to a slam semi?  I thought he won the FO one year...  I need to check myself on that one though.

Moya continually disappoints at the slams, and it's unfortunate because he's one of my favorite players. The same can basically be said of Safin.

About Moya, he did win the French in 1998. His results these past couple years:

Last year:
QTRs RG 04 (Coria)
R16 Wimb 04 (Hewitt)
3rd Rd U.S. 04 (Rochus)

2nd Rd AUS 03 (Fish)
QTRs RG 03 (Verkerk)
DNP Wimb 03
R16 U.S. 03 (El Aynaoui)
