That and you caught me about 6' behind the baseline. I took off like a bat out of hell after that drop shot and gave up half way there. I never give up, I was just too far back, you called me on it...

Got out tonight and hit with Freebird for 2 hours tonight. It was good hitting. He out hit me in general tonight, he was hitting well. I was happy with how I was hitting though. I would laying into some forehands tonight.

I got to the courts early (maybe Freebird was just late as usual, no matter...) and some tall dude was just smashing serves by himself. I asked if he cared if I returned some, heck, it just meant less balls he had to chase. He was inconsistant but when they went in there were huge. I had some nice shots on some. I wiffed a few as well but I was lunging for those. He was a lefy, said he did some training at the Bolleteirri (sp?) academy. He was a super nice guy. Fun to see serves that big.

Hit last night with the boys. We had 6 so that was sweet. OSU Buckeye and I lost a set of doubles after being up 4-2. One of our opponents was one of the guys from Columbus who playes 4.5 getting ready to go to Nationals. The other guy was my typical doubles partner. We played decent, but had too many loose points overall. Still fun.

Then I just hit for a while with OSUBuckeye. Feels good to just run around like a wild man and hit balls. My right knee feels good today but the shoulder is achey. Probably good I bowed out of doubles and quit serving last night after one set. I was hitting a lot of flat serves last night which is usually why my shoulder aches. I was hitting a lof of second serves too, not a great first serve percentage last night...

It has been since the 24th since I have hit any tennis. Just 4 days off and it feels like a life time. I have been working a ton though and time is just not on my side this weekend. I hope to get out soon, hopefully Monday.

OSU Buckeye is out of the country until Sept 10th so our tennis coordinator is out. Jeffro and Freebird asked me if I wanted to get together this weekend and hit but I just had no time.

My should is still achey though so some time off cannot hurt. I have been hitting a little weights and I think that is why the shoulder hurts. It always happens but I always try anyways.

I got to get out and play a little dubs tonight with Jeffro. We both played pretty lame, but it was still fun. We lost 6-4, 2-6, 2-6. We both just missed too much.

My shoulder hurt like hell tonight. I had been lifting the weights hoping it would not bother my shoulder but it did. You would think I would learn. Every year I try the weights and every year it bothers my shoulder when I play tennis. I start with such low weight and such small reps but it makes no difference. I was hopful this time since my shoulder has been feeling great for some time now. Time to cut out the weights and stick to just tennis again.

I use to lift a ton, maybe 60-90 minutes a day. I did that all through high school and mostly through college. I lifted maybe 3 times a week my first 12 months out fo college and then quit. About 12 months after that I started having the shoulder aches. I went to therapy and they say it is tendenitous. I took time off of tennis here and there hoping it would resolve itself but it never does. I took 3 months off and did the physical therapy but my first match back it ached again. If I do not lift and only play doubles (it is half the serving) then my shoulder stays fine. But if I touch any weights I push it over the limits and it aches when I play tennis.

I snuck out and hit for an hour tonight with Freebird. We just did our usual practice session which involves being competitive on every ball we hit. He owned me tonight, but payback is a b.....

My legs felt heavy today, I did not want to move much. I am sure it did not help that Freebird was 15 minutes late and I just jogged most fo that time until he got there.

My volleys still feel a bit delayed, I am feeling rushed. Well, I was. I started to volley much better towards the end tonight. I have not been playing many matches lately and just practicing. Which means I have probably been focusing too much on the groundies...

I hit tonight with Jeffro and Feebird again. My shoulder is still stiff and achey from the lifting I was doing. I hit pretty well, my volleys are solid. I have been joking with Freebird that I am a wall. It fires him up to crush balls right at me, but I still am not missing. It is sweet. I hit some serves to finish the practice session. They sucked. I was landing more in towards the end but still way to low of a percentage.

I played a doubles tournament yesterday with a guy that plays 4.0 for the same club that I play at.

We had a bye in the first round, I think we were seeded #2. The #1 seed was my USTA doubles partner and a 4.0 player.

In our first match we played two guys that came out and played really well. One guy was very unorthodoxed (sp?) and he was hard to read. Very hard to read. We got down 1-4 in the first set, but it was just a break of serve. My partner had a rough start to that match. I wasn;t too worried about it. I hurt them big time with my serve and I knew my partner would pick it up. There serves were not that strong and I knew we could start pushing them on their serves more and they would have a tougher time getting to us on our serves. We ended up winning the last 5 games of the first set to take it 6-4. We then just kept steam rolling and won the second set 6-2.

They scheduled our next match 5 hours later. I went home, got something to eat, watched Roddick and Youhnzy and then came back for more. We won our second or second match very easily. The first round was tougher. We won 6-1, 6-2. One of our opponents had already played 3 times before our match and he was visibly tired. I have played him several times before, he is much better than he was yesterday. Regardless, I think we still would have easily won.

We are in the finals today @ 11:00. We have to play two lefties that beat the #1 seed. I am going out for revenge for my USTA doubles partner.

And for those of you wondering why my USTA dubs partner and I did not play. This is kind of an inner city tournament. These guys have been hitting with each other down town Columbus for the last 30-40 years but most of the competition is 4.0 or below. My partner and I decided not to team up to keep it more fair.

We wrapped up the finals earlier. Here is how it went...

We jumped on them early and broke twice, we won the first set 6-1. We then jumped on them earliy again and went up a break and we were at 3-0. They had a few good games and we found ourselves at 3-3. I wasn't playing great at this point and I was actually a little tight. I haven't played many matches recently and I haven't been in a tournament for a while. But I rarely get tight so this sucked. We stayed on serve and had to go to a tie-breaker which I was not happy about. I was far less agressive on my returns and my volleys.

We get to 3-3 in the tie-breaker and I hit a nasty drop volley with a severe angle. They moved for it but never got close. We get to 5-5 in the tie-breaker. My partner hits a nice return and draws an error. I get to serve it out at 6-5. They had struggled with my serve much more than my partners so I was happy I got to try to serve it out. I hti a first serve in, it never came back. We got the smallest trophy I have ever seen. I think it was maybe 5" tall.

Well, I am short, so maybe the trophy was made in my image? I don't know.

It was a fun tournament. I was very frustrated with myself for getting tight in a local tournament. I wasn't even tight when I went to Nationals and competed, so today was a suprise. I haven't really played too many matches since Distrcits a 3-4 weeks ago but that should not really matter. One thing I thought of later was that I didn't have my normal doubles partner and he makes a big difference for me. I love how cool and calm he is on the court. We always know what each other will do, when to move, what to cover, who will cover what volleys, lobs, and most likely where they will hit. We have only been playing together for the last 12 months but we have gotten very comfortable with each other.

Played last night, didn't play great but I did OK. It did not help that I had to use 4 different racquets throughout the match. I broke a string in one racquet, made the switch to my other good racquet that had a hairline crack in it. I thought that would last another 6 months. Nope, little crack became a huge crack over 30 minutes of play. I then switched to my wooden racquet for a few points and then finally used Jeffro's NCode (which I loved). But it was nice to get some match play in. But the news gets worse.

For budgetary reasons I think tennis for the winter will be eliminated for me. Not something I want to do, but something I think needs to be done. Should help my injuries to take several months off, maybe grab some extra time to study for my Architectural tests. I also think I will try hitting the weights after the first month off and see if it helps when I come back next summer.

Not looking forward to it, and it is not 100% final but I think it is 90% final. I do have the option to just pay the winter fee and just sub all winter and not play USTA. But if I am not going to play USTA I really do not care to play at all.
