i can not believe that the germans, the brits, AND the portugese are out and none of them made it to the final, if those half assed french win on german soil i will be so mad, but i guess there is a first for everything

Forza Italia! Bring it home for Italy!

And those who predict that USA will win, purlease - that'd be like Greg Rusedski winning, well, anything!

You know...when I first looked at coverage of this sport's playoff in the newspaper...I thought we {U.S.A.} had a first-round matchup against Angola.  I'd bet on the U.S.A. to win over Angola.  (We've a first round matchup against the Czech republic.)

Other than that I don't claim to know anything...except that Uruguay won the World Cup twice, and didn't even qualify for the tournament, apparently.

I'd like to wager and win on the United States....I'd like better to parlay a wager on the eventual champion... :))
I took Italy to win over the Ukraine...and won a piddling amount.---Spent a little of it.  (In 'Vegas.)

From there I put a little on Italy to win over the Germans.  Still haven't cashed in on my ticket.

The big payoff will be <for  me> if Italy wins the whole she-bang.  Go Italy! :))

So unfortunately Italy win on PKs.personally I thought France were the better team today. Italy were marginally better in the first half, but they then resorted to very negative football after and France looked superior. Imo, Argentina were the best team overall and would've beaten Germany had the coach not made some moronic substitutions with 10 mins to go. Argentina definitely had the best players anyway. Italy weren't in the top 3 of best teams imo, and only had one great game (vs Germany). I was disappoined that Italy won........ crazy behaviour from Zidane though, can't believe he did that in this last ever match and in a WC final.....

Right there with you SS!  My ancestors may not have played a pretty game (actually ugly) but all that matters is the score at the end of the game.  Buffon made a great save on ZZ.  Zidane was an idiot to do what he did no matter what the player was yelling at him! Not the way for a great player to be remembered in his last game.

Me three, ladies.

My great grandparents came to the States from Calabria via Ellis Island. I'm first generation half-Italian (lol), but my father is an unidentifiable WASP from a tiny family, so his gene pool/cultureal influence--or lack thereof--doesn't count.

Now, maybe some of you may better appreciate my fondness for Francesca Schiavone.

Don't we pick them every cup???    ;-()

Who's that thin yellow goalie the Itallians have. I didn't get the number, but I think his name is...... Goal Post?

Is he any good?

Is a tree as a rocking horse
An ambition fulfilled
And is the sawdust jealous?
I worry about these things .

It came out today:  The other player was calling him "terrorist."  ---Zidane had to run out in front of the other guy to head-butt him.

I don't much care about Soccer, I'm just glad that the team I backed with my betting money (from the Ukraine game onwards...) won. :))

from a BBC article:
link {Wednesday, 12 July 2006, 18:45 GMT 19:45 UK}
Quote
BBC Radio Five Live asked a deaf lip reader to read Materazzi's words phonetically to an Italian translator:
She deciphered the insult as being "you're the son of a terrorist whore"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The BBC's Ten O'Clock News called in experts to study the television footage who said:
Materazzi told Zidane to "calm down" before accusing him of being a "liar" and wished "an ugly death to you and your family". This was followed by "Go f*** yourself"
