Focus

(1/1)

Mark:
Does anybody have good suggestions on how I can react sooner to shots. I've tried split steps however I still feel I see and react to late to a lot of shots. How can I focus better just as the ball is being hit?Any drills or visual keys I may be missing?
Thanks

Are you watching your opponent as they hit the ball ot are you just watching the ball and reacting after they hit it.  I usually watch my opponent very carefully and also do the math in my head about where they are, where the ball is, the height of the ball when they hit it, and which side they hit from.  Usaually that can clue you off on a lot of stuff.  :)

Start by having someone fire wrenches at you and see how your reaction time quadruples.  "If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball".  Sorry.  Couldn't resist that line from the movie "Dodge Ball".

Seriously now, I think that anticipation is the key ingredient to reacting to a shot and anticipation can be enhanced by paying close to attention to how your opponent plays certain shots.  Perhaps you notice that your opponent almost always throws up a lob off a good approach to their backhand.  Knowing this, you can anticipate and be ready to retreat to hit an overhead.  Obviously that's just one example, but it applies pretty much accross the board.

2 things can help you. Try to improve reaction and anticipation. You can work on reaction with different physical or tennis drills like someone stands in front of you and drops the ball randomly etc. Anticipation will help you to prepare earlier and it can be developed by understanding the strategy of tennis and your opponent. If you are looking for specific drill, check our website http://tennisisland.us with over 1500 materials. Good luck
