No one is saying that his winning days are over, just that he may now lose some of the mental edge he held over player such as Roddick, Hewitt and Agassi. Considering this, and the fact that many observers were tipping him for the calender slam, today's result was obviously significant.

No player has ever gone through a year undefeated.  Sampras, Agassi, McEnroe, Federer, yet they all dominated at one time or another.  I feel Federer can pull a Sampras and dominate for a few more years.  Even when Sampras dominated he lost matches to FAR worse than Safin.  I am sure he will be just fine.  It is probably a wake up call for him though to step it up, and I like that!

If he did win the French this year it would be some huge compensation for what happened yesterday. What would also be huge is if he became the first person since Bjorn Borg to win both the FO and Wimbledon in the same year. The last person to come close to this was Agassi in 1999, who won the FO and then lost in the Wimbledon final to sampras.

Federer can still accomplish some massive things this year.

I agree Federer has the game to win the French Open, but lets just say the field is a lot more level as there are many great clay court players who can go out on the kitty litter and run balls down all day.  Most all of the South Americans and Spaniards fit this mold.

I don't think he's going to lose his edge because he lost to Safin.  Safin and Federer are the only two players on tour that when they're on, NOBODY stands a chance, arguably on any surface.  You can't say that about Roddick, Hewitt, Agassi, or anybody else.  They are by far the two most gifted players on tour.

I think people aren't going to fear Federer's game any less but fear Safin EVEN MORE.  Maybe he's finally getting his head together.  But, then again, if he brain cramps against Hewitt...

This is what all hardcore tennis fans were praying for -- two of the most talented players on the tour, two who are both in the Most Gifted OF ALL TIME Top 10 List, both playing good tennis as they're both approaching their prime.  Safin is the only person who can legitimately step up to become a REAL rival to Federer, and everybody knows that nothing makes sports more interesting than a bona fide rivalry.  We've been trying to manufacture a rivalry between Roddick and Roger for a while now, and it just wasn't working.  This one is real.  

I just sort of wish they hated each other a little little bit.  

Imagine, if this rivalry plays out, it means they're going to elevate their games way more than they'd have without each other.  Imagine, Federer with an ELEVATED GAME!!!  It's silly.  Silly I tell's ya.

Yeah, a rivalry would be great for tennis.  If Federer really wanted to draw some attention to a potential rivalry he should of punched Safin after the loss.  :)

I dont agree when Safin is on nobody can touch him.   Wasnt he on all last fall, and he lost TWICE to Andy Roddick, indoors, which isnt even Roddicks best surface, he is better on hard courts than grass.

That's hard to say, but I'd say that Safin is a more talented all round player than Roddick for sure. If Safin was playing Roddick the other night instead of Fed, he'd still have won, likely much more comfortably too, might I add.

I am not certain he will win no more slams in his career, I just think it could happen that way.    I am certain he will win no slams this year.   So the no slams this year is a will, the no more slams in his career is a should.    

        For the record to be 1 at the end of this year I doubt winning only Wimbledon(which he wont)would be enough anyway.   He would need to win a second slam likely which now is getting into the realm of fantasy.
