Well I just got the call to sub at our club in the singles league and against probably our toughest singles player at our club.......next to Jster of course!!  I don't know why I would do this to myself but for a good challenge to watch the ball, hit it with full non-tentative strokes, and not get mad at myself when I miss shots that I shouldn't.  Hopefully I will do well but the guy I am playing has me in proly every singles category, more consistent groundies, better speed, proly better serve, and proly better return.  We shall see how it goes?????   ||-|

Good luck on the court is nice to have, but it's usually extraneous when playing against Baker.

You have better volleys, and yes, believe it or not, volleying is part of singles.

Thats why I said "singles categories"!  If we were on a dubs court I should hope that I am better than him overall.......but on a singles court.......not so much!   :(

I actually feel a diss for Freebird.  I would rather play JM that Freebird any day in singles and I would give Freebird the edge over JM persoanlly.  I have played both a handful of times.  Even when JM has schooled me it is nothing like what Freebird has done on occassion.  I still have the scars to prove it, see:

JM is a SOLID singles player.  If you stay back and rally with him and let him get into a groove, he will really find a niche from the baseline after a few games.  You have to really mix it up on him and get in when possible.  Put pressure on him at all times.  He has the better of me the last couple of years (blame it on the knee), but we practice together some, and when I am beating him, I am serving him off the court and that seems to get him down (as in depressed) a little.  This talk is getting me pumped up and bummed at the same time since I CANT BLEEPING PLAY!!!!  BUT, I WILL be back (as Ahnold once said).

Well the singles went fairly well last night!  I came out firing and broke him right away....but he broke right back.   We stayed on serve from that point until 3-3.   That is where things changed for the worse on my part.  He won the next 5 games to lead 8-3 and then I held serve to get back to 4-8.  We were just about out of time so we slugged some serious groundstrokes for a couple of minutes!  
Overall I played pretty solid, my only complaint was through bad singles footwork/not getting down low on some groundies, I hit too many shots kind of high and not deep enough......these shots of mine were jumped on and I mean hit to the corners for straight winners!  Ouch!  Oh well, you live, you learn!    :)

I've seen myself on video once in my life and it was from back in the day ('85 Whitehall final in singles).  My opponent's wife taped it and I just happened to be in the zone that day.  I watched it and hit 80% first serves in that day.  I won easily and it was back when there were 8 seeds (not 8 players; 8 seeds!!).  OH TO PLAY LIKE THAT AGAIN :depressed:  :crying:
But even then, as good as I felt, I looked a lot worse on tape than I thought I would.  So maybe you DON'T want to watch it  :))

I've seen myself on tape before and its:  heavier than I wish I was, horrible footwork, not bending my knees enough.....I think that covers it!  Truly a very humbling experience....and I've watched more than once!!!   :(

I said the same thing about me getting down and dirty for low balls...and that was when I had a 2 GOOD knees!  We non-5'4" guys have problems with this  ..-) .

Yeah, I was gonna say my knees have been giving me troubles since my growth spurt between 9th grade and Soph. in high school!
