Is Agassi waiting for that final slam win?
« on: February 10, 2005, 10:55:58 AM »
Is Agassi waiting to win that one final slam before retiring?   Personaly I think he will retire if he wins another slam, he wants to go out on a high like Sampras, and get the 9th slam which moves him ahead instead of being tied with a cluster of other greats at 8 slams.   I dont know how long he will keep trying if he doesnt, but if he does win that one slam he will be gone I predict.

As much as I like Agassi, I don't see him winning another slam with the current crowd. Maybe he can take solice in helping the US win Davis Cup.
I've been a tennis bum for half my life.
I'll just be a bum for the other half.

Well there are two main questions I guess:

1)Will he retire if he were to win another slam, and go out on that high?
2)How long would he go without winning a slam before calling it quits at this point?

After getting demolished in San Jose, a Slam win sounds very far fetched.

I am not sure how long he will go without  a slam before he decides enough is enough.  I cannot imagine anyone beating him as badly as he got beat today, not even Federer...

And I agree, after today's beating, a slam win looks all the more unlikely.  But he does bring his bigger game to the slams.  :)
Good Luck on the Court!!!

Agassi is still playing because he can still compete.  However, it's clear that age is catching up - not in his performance but in his ability to recover from macthes and tournaments.  This results in less match play, and as a result his sharpness suffers.

He isn't going to win another slam.

Andre's best shot for a slam was the AO. The French wil not be nice, Wimbledon, round of 16 at best, and  the USO....time to enjoy the family.

His performance in the Aussie Open was encouraging.   He dominated his first three opponents, battled through a devastatingly powerful Johansson in the 4th round, and was respectable against a too-in-form Federer in the quarters.   His performance here was not though.
I agree he can play some very good tennis, but it is hard to recover and keep going for him.

Do you think that's why he decided to play Davis Cup? Maybe he justs wants to go out on a high. Wouldn't anyone?

Remember when everyone was going on and on about how Pete needed to retire? He basically said that he was the one who would make that decision, not sports writers/commentators. 'Dre will know when it's time.

Sadly, however, I don't see another Slam out there for him. There are too many guys playing out of their minds right now. It would take some pull-outs because of injuries and just the right draw.

I predict that the US Open will be his farewll appearance...and I hope he can duplicate what Pete did.
I was at this casino minding my own business, and this guy came up to me and said, "You're gonna have to move, you're blocking a fire exit." As though if there was a fire, I wasn't gonna run. If you're flammible and have legs, you are never blocking a fire exit.  - Mitch Hedberg

I think he may just realize that he can still contribute and, as I mentioned earlier, he can get in some matches without much damage to the bod.

Agassi is an AWESOME Davis Cup player.  A team with Agassi, Roddick, and the Bryans would be almost unbeatable on any surface and in any location.
