This thought came to me following a discussion with a friend about Tiger and Roger.

I told him that during the Open Era (huh? golf fans are equally pompous and ignorant), there have only been three "dynasties" (his term) in tennis: Borg (70s), Sampras (90s) and Federer (00s).

Then I made the claim that, arguably, the 80s was tennis' "Golden Age," with the likes of McEnroe, Connors, Lendl, Wilander and Edberg all spliting the pie into 5ths.

The 80s gets my vote as tennis' "Golden Age."

What you say? Please explain.

Me i go for the 80s,McEnroe @ the time was my fav player.When he beat Borg i was over the moon.That final was as good as iv ever seen.For me that was the Golden Age in tennis as Bab says,the players were so close.Hmmmm then thay change the rackets with new strings.Then tennis became smash & grab,points won on service all the time.

 white tennis balls?  some great matches , than 80`s tennis came around the bad boys of tennis , nastase started it  jimmy connors, big mac, was entertaining especially tv tennis
 announcer  bud collins too, the game grew  from there and technology with racquets
 came about optic orange tennis balls for indoor carpet matches and roscoe tanner  hitting
 150 mph + serves and he volleyed  the whole stadium would say wow  then fruwitt and mc millian ruled doubles  than mc enroe and pete flemming than  tennis slowed down a few years in late late 80`s the 90`s  came about younger players more tv coverage ,etc

WTF????????????   Is this a typo or was it something with the balls?   And, did they track serve speed then???

I just thought of something to add here.  Wasn't tennis so popular in the 80's in the U.S., I think, that is was always on PBS or some other regular T.V. channels like every week.  I think this was about Mcenroe's time when this happened.  I seem to remember reading about this.

It's speculated that Tanner's serve approached 140. I don't know how reliable those timing mechanisms were back then, as technology today is better than it was even 20 years ago, or whether that's what he served during a match or an expo...?????
