Topic: What I'm listening to now....

Ever since I saw the trailer for the new movie Pineapple Express, I've been going crazy over the movie's song Paper Planes by M.I.A., a Sri Lankan rapper. I had no idea what the song was about until I listened closely to the first line of the song:

I fly like paper, get high like planes...

So I like a song about drug abuse.

There is great music being made now, some of it derivative of what was made then. Some of it is updating the sound of an Ella Fitzgerald song. Verve put out 3 remix CDs with new mixes of Jazz standards. Some of the mixes are forgetable, but some are fantastic.

By the early 1990s, I was into grunge, which is a subcategory of alternative. Today, the genre is the same but the angst is gone. I like Modest Mouse for their intelligent wordplay. Beck, Kings of Leon (southern twang, good times music), Foo Fighters (rockers) and Interpol (Joy Division spawn, circa 1979).

I scratch myself when I hear others say music     with The Beatles or Pink Floyd. I know what they listen to. I can't help but think what they are missing out on.

There's that...and the fact that it makes it difficult to enjoy live music.

I do sometimes. You're probably right though. I don't usually read that many threads and even the threads I do read I don't usually read all the post.

Most of the bands I really like are indy bands, more creative less commerical sound IMO. The mainstream bands I do sometimes listen to are Flyleaf, Radiohead, Oasis,Weezer(big fav) Cold play, Foo Fighters, Smashing Pumpkins, N.E.R.D, Simple Plan. I'm sure there's more but can't remember them right now. I like some of the Jazz and Blues out now but I prefer old school jazz, blues anyday, same with Hip Hop.

Oh god I hate when you guys do this!   It just reminds me how old I am... I have not heard of hardly any of these!  I've heard a little about Cold Play and Smashing Pumpkins (but couldn't tell you anything they sung)...the rest are like a foreign language to me!  Oh...the generation gap is showing!!!!

You must be referring to Dimebag from Pantera. I used to live about 10 minutes from Dime's house in Arlington. I love mostly the heavy music like Pantera, Superjoint Ritual, Mastodon, Corrosion of Conformity, etc.
