He's trying for a 1930's  Old Chicago motiff.
It's funny, that and Babe were the kind of songs that preciptiated the Styx break up. DY wanted to go for the more power pop type songs while Tommy Shaw and JY were into the the rock and roll. I thought they had a good mix, but they couldn't co-exist.

Time for another Yello kick.
Who is Yello? You ask.
You've probably heard their music, but never knew who they were. They can be heard anytime you watch Ferris Beuller's Day Off. The created a catchy and instanly memorable concoction called "Oh Yeah" and it's been used in movies begining with Ferris and commercials ever since. But they weren't a one hit wonder, though it may seem so in the US.
They existed on the European dance/art house scene a few years before "Oh Yeah!" appeared and have many amazing, varied and unsual songs to their credit. They have a few European hits to their credit (Bostich, Bananas to the Beat, Lost Again, Vicious Games, The Race, Jungle Bill) and are still at it. Even though they don't sell millions. They don't need money. One of the duo (Dieter Meier) is a Swiss millionaire who inherited a successfull business.
They've unfortuantly left their more haunting, ethnically rich sounds behind for thumping techno and as a result have lost their originality. But they are still better than most of the electronic stuff out there.

I NEVER buy albums... last time was the last BSB's album in June 2005 since they're my favorite. But, my second fave would have to be Maroon 5. I just bought their new album, and I have to say that I am disappointed. The first one was very R & B infused. This one is very all over the place. It's rocky, it's 90's it's 50's big band, it's pop-y... it's very different. I only like about 4 songs. "Makes Me Wonder" is definately the best song on the album. I'm loving "Nothing Lasts Forever" which comes from the collabo Adam did with Kanye West from "Heard 'Em Say'. Because it's pretty good, different, and they're popular.. it's prolly Album of the Year for the Grammy, if not a nomination.

I spent about 24 years in the '80s before deciding I was getting old and needed to find some new tunes.  I'm a Rhapsody subscriber now and somewhat at the mercy of what they highlight, but here are some of the acts I've been into lately:  

Pernice Brothers, Keane, Josh Rouse, The Charlatans, David Kilgour, Howie Day, Miguel Migs, Ryan Adams, Jack's Mannequin, Kill Hannah, Imogen Heap, The Teddybears, Mercury Rev, Modest Mouse, The Shins, Field Music, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Kaskade, The Sea and Cake, The Killers

There's always new tunes and new sounds, or great rehashes of old sounds. For instance World Party is a guy who used to be in the Waterboys who's biggest influences were the Beatles and ELO, but with a more lush sound. He's a precurser to Robbie Williams who covered one of his songs a few years ago (She's the One). Every band you mentioned there is essentially the same thing. Revamping or rehashing old sounds.
So really to me everything that is good is good no matter when it was made. I've found a few songs from some of the groups that you mentioned that I've enjoyed as well.

There's good dance music and bad dance music. It's not about the type of music, it's about the quality of the song or the artist. Underworld makes awsome music. They are considered dance, or electronic.
It's basically rude to listen to music in a public place without head phones, unless it's in a club or something. They should be told to turn it off.
As for me I just finished listening to some Manu Negro/Manu Chau. About as varied and wild an experience you can get listening to music. What the Clash did with Sandinista! Manu Chau does with all his releases (He just doesn't speak much English, mostly Spanish, some French, even some Arabic of some sort).

I'm sure the continent gap has something to do with it, which is why I'd love to see more of what you're listening to, Kick!  Some of my fondest music memories are the mid 80s during the heyday of the "2nd British Invasion".

After spending the last 12 months or so scrounging for new tunes, the release of the latest Rush album has caused me to go back and start listening to more of my older favorites.  Today I made a playlist that I called "Big 3" - the 3 groups which have sort of rotated as being my favorites since I was a teenager - Yes, Rush, and Simple Minds.  An eclectic mix, you might say  Anyway, 60 Rush tunes, 120 Simple Minds, and 80 Yes tunes, and I am one seriously jamming dude!

I've tried to do something similar, but in a different way. The problem is I have such a wide range of musical styles that I don't just like, but really get into. Like a Jazz efficianado loves his jazz (funny, I'm not really into jazz, but I am into a lot of music that is an offshoot of jazz). I've got a 60 gig Ipod that I filled with various albums, songs and complete artist discographies. For instance every Sting album is on there, as well as every Yello and World Party album. There are others, but too numerous to mention. Most of the Beach Boys, most of Rush and Styx for example.
Anyway I went through and created 4 major playlists. My 50-60s, My 70's, My 80's and My 90's which also includes current songs. It the 80's playlist and broke it down to number of songs by groups. Now these aren't favorite songs, but songs I'm not likely to skip when they play. Songs I'm inclined to stop and listen to if I'm skipping around a radio dial. Here is the result;
