Slam vs #1
« on: February 21, 2005, 10:24:25 AM »
Which would you prefer?  Win a slam or being #1 for a few months?  I would rather win a slam title, no questions aksed.  And I wouldn't even care which slam.  I have heard Mauresmo say when she reached #1 making some comment about it being the most important thing to her...  Seemed backwards to me, maybe I am wrong?
Good Luck on the Court!!!

Being #1 for sure. Winning a slam might only mean that you got on a good streak during the week and rolled off a couple of wins in a row, it doesn't automatically mean that you're the best player in the world, which is what the #1 ranking signifies.

definitely a slam for me and preferably wimbledon, to win a grand slam would prove that you play the big matches at a great level, whereas being number 1 may not mean you have won a slam therefore not being able to win the biggest matches.

I don't think being number 1 in the world means you're the best player in the world - I wouldn't say Mauresmo has ever been the best in the world, but capitalised on Serena, Clijsters and Henin getting hurt. She only got to number 1 because she played more than the others. So for me, Slam every time

In the men's game it's very rare to be at the top without having won a slam - only Marcelo Rios has achieved that, and he only had six weeks up there.  Number one normally means you're holding at least one slam (although not always).  Slam winners however, can come out of the blue.

Having said that, I'd go for the slam win for posterity.  Who remembers a guy who was number one for a couple of weeks?  But tennis fans don't forget a Wimbledon champion.

I think I'd rather win a slam. OF course, as we've seen this year with player like Gaudio, Myskina & Kuznetsova, winning a slam doesnt necessarily make you a good player. And the majority of htese players have managed to embarras the legacy they created by winning a slam -- never the less, I would feel on top of the world to hold up the trophy at Wimbledone and just feel like the king of the grass and king of tennis even if only for a year....I'd love it.

That's very harsh saying they've embarrassed the legacy of Slams - it's not as if Gaudio, Myskina and Kuznetsova are no-marks - theyre all in and around the top 20.

Rainer -- you're right it was a little harsh.

what I meant was that they're definitely promising potentials but they havne't lived up to what you'd expect a slam-winner to live up to thus far. Guess it's a matter of itme before they start playing amazing

I would love to tell my Grand children (no I do not have any yet) that I was the best tennis player in the world once upon a time.  However, I would much rather show them a slam trophy in the trophy case next to my plastic trophies from level "B" Tennis Tournaments.    :a)

I'd rather have a Slam win.  It's FOR EVER, nothing will change the fact that I was the winner at say the USO or Wimby in 20XX.  On the other hand, being #1 for 2 days is hardly anything to write home about.
