Still I miss the courts, my buds, and the feel of striking a tennis ball just right.

I do feel for you bro! Especially since I will have a plastic knee in my future (according to 2 different docs, 1 the Cols Blue Jacket knee guy).

Well, a sad day has come and gone.

Received notification last week that after 14 years on the waiting list, my name has come up for membership at the club. It's been a dream of mine since I was a teenager to become a full fledged member. Unfortunately, in my current physical/medical condition I can't justify the investment at this time. So my name drops back to the bottom of the waiting list of nearly 200 applicants and the process begins again. This means even if I can improve my condition over the next year or so, my indoor tennis time will be restricted to twice a month as a guest. The reality of it is this really has no immediate impact on my current lifestyle. But during this season of reflection it's quite depressing.

Sorry to hear buddy. I know it cannot be fun to be in a position where tennis is not an option. You had me excited when I saw you posted in here but then slapped me with this instead.

I hope you get back to where you want to be, and far quicker than you anticipate. Besides, I don't want you to have any excuses when we finally play.

Tell the club you know me and you want a standing open invitation, I doubt it will do you any good though.

Didn't mean for it to be a pity party.....or maybe I did.

Had a nice visit from one of my pupils yesterday when he dropped off a stick for stringing. We chatted a bit about the challenges ahead of me. It helps me to verbalize.

I'll be eligible for a limited membership in a couple years and then a regular membership a few years after that. The sad part about passing on the full stock membership is that it cuts the yearly dues in half to about $250 and enables unlimited playing time and voting rights. The upside to passing on stock membership at this time is the required investment of nearly $5K. I've got it, but in these uncertain times I'd much rather have the cash on hand.

It's nice to know that even in my current condition that the combination of my serve and return game are enough to handle the likes of you and OSU.

Sorry to read of the setback. I feel very strongly about getting value for money and think you are doing the right thing. This is going to come up here soon with my Thursday night group. Although not always in a straightforward manner, we have always been able to get time but it is starting to be a questionable financial investment as we are all getting older. There are only five of us and one has been out for the whole winter season so far with a shot achilles tendon. Two others of us have been out for a few weeks with aches and pains (see my thread) and another likes to go skiing. So it can sometimes be hard to find even two at home and available. The local county has big financial problems and is likely to squeeze as much as possible from those wanting to play.

It's not bad to feel a bit down because of having to downturn something you have waited so long for. I would feel just the same. Stay up and strong Monster, you are a great fella and I am sure that with time and hard work you will overcome it all. Make the best out of 2011!

Thanks for chiming in Euroka and Big Vic.

Am hoping to use my disappointment in losing the membership to help fuel my bid for a comeback over the next couple years.

I continue to improve at table tennis and the puppy we got July 2010 is helping to keep me busy in the woods.

I hope your indoor time works out Euroka. Seems like their should be no shortage of playas in your area, but sometimes filling the gaps when guys can't make it is a bit of a chore. We actually used 2 informal leagues to help grow the available player pool here in the sticks. Tues eves was the B league group which was a low level 4.0 crowd. Thurs. eve was the advanced group for 4.5 and up. What was neat was that the Tues group actually helped develop several players for the advanced group! It was also fun when the upper level players would sub in on Tues nights. It really seemed to engergize everyone. After several years we grew a group of 8 regulars into a list of over 25 players we could call on.

That's certainly a fine way to go but over here I tremble at the thought of the financial management.

It's so darn hard to get everything right

. We had a social doubles game scheduled outside today. Temperature fine, in the high 40s, no wind but, you guessed it, drizzle.

The local club is a private key club.
The only real problem we encountered was having guests or limited members exceed their monthly visits. Aside from that, it was smoooooth sailing!

I can't imagine the hoops you folks normally have to jump through to get indoor court time. And of course the cost.

It's a bummer you got rained out. Temps in the high 40's is great for outdoor tennis!!!

It was about 35 and squishy here so I didn't venture out ice fishing.

No hoops. Schedule your tennis and go play. It does cost money to play though. Typically $18.00 for 2 hours of dubs. Doesn't sound like a lot until you play 2+ times a week and then get the monthly bill. I sub some though and subbing is free. Of course wifey is playing now too so we have to pay for that as well.

My impression from previous discussions was that getting court time was sometimes difficult.

The rates here are as follows-

Guest (up to twice a month) $3.00
Limited Membership- $290/yr = unlimited playing time from 9pm to 9am, can guest in during regular hours like a normal guest.

Associate Membership- $540/yr = unlimited playing time all hours

Stock Membership- $4500 one-time purchase (stock value goes up $100/yr to acount for inflation) then the yearly dues drop to about $250. Unlimited playing time, full voting rights, eligible to serve on the board.

3 nice hardcourts indoor with an ok locker room/shower. Small viewing area with few amenities.

Not bad for out here in the sticks!

Hard to get court time if you are trying to schedule it on the fly. We have a court reserved for Wed at 7:00 - 9:00 each week. If you want to sneak in for evening play it could be tough because of all the leagues. We do have to pay $200.00 per year for a membership fee as well. And that is probably as cheap as it gets in Columbus, the other clubs I believe are more pricey.

I could not put my finger on the 2010-2011 rates but for 2009-2010 it was $40 an hour and $1280 for one hour for the winter season on the indoor courts run by the county. It is heavily oversubscribed and one has to take part in a lottery. We were lucky enough to get 2 hours on a week night. We have been splitting the cost over 5 people.

430pm-1055pm with a short break for some molten lava chili. Almost had to go to the hospital after taste-testing a 1/4 teaspoon of the hot sauce!!!

Yeah, long bouts of TT are awesome! We usually play for a minimum of 3-4 hours on Tues & Thurs eves. That's pretty much all I got goin to replace the tennis.
