Gee, reading a lot about Roger lately, let me see what I've come up with:

1.  He will never win another match (not even against anyone not named Nadal)
2.  He's too old so he needs to retire right now
3.  He's so fragile in the head now that he'll probably retire soon
4.  Blah, Blah, Blah...  and many more. ROFL_2

Well, here's to some of the good times from before:

None of the Nay Sayers KNOW anything.

Easy to forget how great and tenacious a player Fed is when all you want to do is tear him down.

This year has just begun - as long as Roger stays healthy & injury free - he'll be a true force to reckon with - and that included Nadal.

He made the final of the AO - better outcome tham last year - plus - as far as we know he is over the mono ill effects - fo things look much better than they did this time last year.

Yeah - he has a tough loss to deal with - but he's had tough losses before and come back even better.

What's different now?  He's a bit older - but that just translates into being more experienced.

He'll "deal" just fine.

It's his fans and detractors who will need to learn to "deal" - Fed ain't goin' no where - except to step into the winner's circle many more times.

I hope you are right. But at this point I will be very surprised if he can bounce back to his satisfaction unless he reevaluates his priorities, his approach to the game, how he wants to take a coach's help, tactics and a lot more.
I am a Fed fan but it is not difficult, at this point, to conclude that Fed has been too stubborn about his game [in it's entirety including mental, tactical and willingness to take outside input etc.] for his own good. I mean he himself knows it. At the level he is in, he has to be constantly adapting, understanding the areas for improvement and making changes.

If I heard this right, since the beginning of 2008 he is 0-10 against top-ten players when the match has gone to the deciding set [either the 5th set or the 3rd set depending on the tournament]. That says a lot.

I get your point.  But I see that he's actually 0-8 since 2008.  However, 2008 was an unusual year so until he starts having 2-3 years like that - then I don't know if that's the norm or the unusual?

Also, the only really 'surprise' players in that 0-8 streak are Simon and Roddick.  The other 2 players are Murray and Nadal.  So he has that record against 4 players in the top 10.

Master's Cup (Simon)
Master's Cup (Murray)
Madrid (Murray)
Wimbledon (Nadal)
Hamburg (Nadal)
Miami (Roddick)
Australian Open (Nadal)
Doha (Murray)

I do agree that he needs to do something different but like another player was saying in a recent interview, it's not like Federer is just really bad. I mean, you're basically known for the slams and in the slams:

2009 Australian Open (Finalist) - losing to Nadal
2008 U.S. Open (Winner)
2008 Wimbledon (Finalist) - losing to Nadal
2008 French Open (Finalist) - losing to Nadal
2008 Australian Open (SF) - losing to Djokovic
2007 U.S. Open (Winner)
2007 Wimbledon (Winner)
2007 French Open (Finalist) - losing to Nadal
2007 Australian Open (Winner)

Basically, Roger is losing in grand slams to ONE player.  So it's not like the guy sucks! Big Grin

I know we're probably not going to see any more 3 of 4 winners in slams by Roger, but let's see how he does in a 100% healthy year this year before he's thrown to the dogs.  I mean, if you look at his results from last year - they have improved in every tournament so far.  Hey - you got to look at the best in anything.

I still think the Australian Open loss was the curse of Kooyong! Guns ROFL_2

Dallas, you sound like a parent defending a deliquent teen when what he needs is some good old tough love. No one is throwing Roger to the dogs.
I know there are some critics who go overboard but most observers agree that Fed needs to make important changes if he wants to  make the most out of what's left of his career. I mean if you all you care is that he somehow limps to that 14th slam, then you are right, nothing's really wrong. But if it's about Fed's doing the right things, everybody except he and his team seems to know the answer to that one.

Why do Nadal and Murray not count? It's not as if he has been comprehensively outplayed and outclassed by those two. Outside of clay, he has repeatedly been losing close matches to them. In the past two slam finals with Nadal, he had won the 4th set and the momentum was with him going into the 5th. He lost because he could not attack, when it was time to, earlier in the match and in the 5th. He may be a better defender than the rest of the tour but he can't defend and hope that Nadal/murray/simon will beat themselves. Not going to happen. His UEs are not the UEs of a #2 player and he at least has to see that they are happening if he is to improve.  If you are anyway going to lose, at least don't beat yourself. Why not go down with guns blazing and mind working? In his foolhardy stubbornness, he surrendered both his grass court edge and his hard court edge to Nadal. Fed knows it and that's why he cried after losing AO final.

Maybe he didn't surrender those titles... just maybe Nadal took them?  It happens.  It's not the end of the world.

Do I want him to get better - sure!  But I just want to give him more credit to think that he is trying something.  We all can be back seat drivers, but surely he knows what's best and wants what's best...don't you think? Confused1

Dear Fans

I would like to thank you for the overwhelming amount of messages and letters you sent me this past week. Losing the Australian Open final certainly hurt, but it is important to move on and focus on the challenges lying ahead. I feel fine and fit and am eager to get back on court. I have enjoyed a few days off, which was great, and will soon be training again.

Thank you once again for supporting me and giving me such a lot of positive input! A lot of you have noticed that my website was slow after the final Down Under. The reason for that was the enormous amount of traffic – more than we had ever experienced before. New hardware for the server has been ordered and will be installed as soon as possible so that you can enjoy rogerfederer.com without hassles in the future!

Kind regards
Roger

Has anyone confirmed Roger actually writes these updates? I somehow doubt Fed knows anything about hardware upgrades being performed on his websites servers  ROFL_2

It'd be nice if he writes them, although in all likelihood its just some PR agency  Mad!

I think I read somewhere that he does get "help" from the folks, but he does write them. (probably with them telling him what to say! ROFL_2).  He has also stated that he visits the site regularly!

I'd like to be able to read some of the messages he got.  Most of them I'm sure expressed support and hope that he'll be ready to go for the next tournaments. I'm guessin' he also got a lot of tennis instruction from players that can hardly hit the ball but full of good advice.  ROFL_2

It's really nice that he communicates through his fan site.  Rafa doesn't do that.  sadd

Thanks for the update Dallas!
I'd love to be a fly on the wall when Roger sits down to analyze his performance in the final.
I've often wondered if players review the matches in detail and if so, how much technical support do they use?
Perhaps that's overcomplicating things, but sometimes additional info provided from vids and computers can bring to light
aspects of the game not witnessed or considered.

HERE ARE JUST A FEW OF THE THOUSANDS THAT HE RECEIVED:

Dear Roger
The match just finished and all I can hope is that you feel proud of yourself. I'm sure everybody who saw that match,
saw the great effort you put in every point. And it was a wonderfoul perfomance no matter the result, you didn't get the 14 but you'll get it next time
Keep yourself focus, you're getting better and this is just the beginning of the best year of your life. Always keep that in mind, and keep a smile in your face
And it's fine if you cry, it just proove you're a human been. Don't worry about it, if you need it let it out. you make me cry just by seeing you :-D
I still believe you're the greatest tennis player in the world, now you need to believe that
Hope to see you playing again soon, making the best effort like you akways does. You're my Idol
Lots of love

 Dearest Roger,

Although the match didn't go in your favor...you still won our hearts!!! The way you are so expressive about your emotions it is awesome to know that you feel so deeply about tennis and your committment to the game is more than anyone else's!!!

I am hoping that this year will bring on improvements in your streak and you will not lose your ranking anymore than you have already lost. Now I know it is not about creating a record but it is about playing the game that you so love and is in your veins:)

All the best of luck for the rest of the season...

Cheering for you forever!!!
