First-time pairing Lukas Dlouhy and Philipp Kohlschreiber upset third seeds and Roland Garros finalists Wesley Moodie and Dick Norman 6-7(1), 6-3, 10-8 in 89 minutes Monday at the China Open in Beijing. Moodie and Norman, the Ordina Open titlists in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, dropped to a 20-9 match record on the season.

Another first-time team Mark Knowles and Andy Roddick saved all six break points they faced to beat wild cards Hsin-Han Lee and Tsung-Hua Yang 6-3, 6-4 in just 58 minutes.

At the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships in Tokyo, top seeds Frantisek Cermak and Michal Mertinak improved to 36-20 on the year after they beat Andreas Beck and Philipp Petzschner 6-2, 6-3 in 56 minutes.

Cermak and Mertinak have won four ATP World Tour doubles titles this year at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel in Acapulco, the MercedesCup in Stuttgart, the ATP Studena Croatia Open in Umag and the BCR Open Romania in Bucharest.

Japanese wild cards Hiroki Kondo and Go Soeda delighted home tennis fans as they stunned fourth seeds Travis Parrott and Filip Polasek 6-2, 5-7, 10-7 to reach the quarter-finals. They next will face British-Australian pairing Ross Hutchins and Jordan Kerr, who defeated Juan Monaco and Radek Stepanek 7-5, 4-6, 10-7.

American Andy Roddick is in pole position to clinch one of three remaining singles berths at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in November.
Andy Roddick returns to the ATP World Tour circuit this week, leading the battle to secure one of three remaining singles berths at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in November.

The American, who made a US Open third-round exit (l. to Isner) last month, will be looking to defend his Beijing title at the China Open, an ATP World Tour 500 hard-court tennis tournament.  Roddick will face competition from Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and four other players, Nikolay Davydenko, Fernando Verdasco, Fernando Gonzalez and Robin Soderling, who are also attempting to reach the elite circuit finale.

Davydenko added 250 South African Airways 2009 ATP Rankings points after capturing his third ATP World Tour title of the year over Spanish rival Verdasco — who picked up 150 Rankings points — at the Proton Malaysian Open, Kuala Lumpur 2009.

Frenchmen Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gilles Simon, last week’s titlist at the PTT Thailand Open in Bangkok (d. Troicki), will challenge del Potro for the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships in Tokyo.  The 21-year-old del Potro, the 2008 runner-up, is competing for the first time since clinching the US Open title.

Roger Federer, Nadal, Andy Murray, Djokovic and del Potro have already qualified for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals at the O2 arena in London.

2009 Year-To-Date South African Airways ATP Ranking Points (5 October, 2009)
1 Roger Federer 9855
2 Rafael Nadal 8145
3 Andy Murray 6040
4 Juan Martin del Potro 5735
5 Novak Djokovic 5550
6 Andy Roddick 4320
7 Fernando Verdasco 2930
8 Fernando Gonzalez 2645
9 Robin Soderling 2475
10 Nikolay Davydenko 2405
11 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 2050
12 Tommy Robredo 1905
13 Gilles Simon 1890
14 Tommy Haas 1780
15 David Ferrer 1750

The Barclays ATP World Tour Finals will feature the world’s top eight singles players and eight doubles teams competing to be officially crowned 2009 ATP World Tour Champions.  Each of the top eight players and doubles teams will be drawn to play three round-robin matches to determine which four players and teams advance to the knockout semi-finals.

With a capacity of 250,000, less than 20,000 tickets remain on sale to tennis fans across the group sessions at The O2, which will host the eight-day singles and doubles tournament. Tickets are available online through www.BarclaysATPWorldTourFinals.com or by calling 0844 847 2495 within the UK. Overseas customers should call +44 161 372 0025.
