Yes, I thought about that.  As much as we have been communicating to find a story involving both Maria and Roger - what a co-incident! :rofl_2:

Very funny indeed that we have a story like that and a huge coincidence  :rofl_2:

Henin's absence clears way for Sharapova to close on No1

Richard Jago in Doha
Monday February 18, 2008
The Guardian

Maria Sharapova will make her first return to the WTA Tour this week after her Australian Open success with predictions that she will soon take the world No1 position away from Justine Henin.

Sharapova lost only 32 games in 14 sets and seven matches in succeeding in Melbourne last month, including a quarter-final dismantling of Henin, who yesterday won the Antwerp Diamond Games. However, more pertinent to the 20-year-old now is to realise predictions that she can move to the top of the world rankings and dominate the women's game over the next few years.

She has received a bye in the first round of the Qatar Total Open and will not be action until tomorrow at the earliest. Her Australian victory felt like a watershed in her career and, two weeks ago, she threw off another yoke by making a successful Fed Cup debut for Russia.

For her this was an important statement of an identity which she has clung to ever since she was farmed off from Siberia to Nick Bollettieri's academy in Florida at the age of seven. It is one which has survived despite a taste for fast food and a liking for Pippi Longstocking, a children's book heroine. To have team-mates applauding her into the locker room after her first match, rather than questioning why she comes to watch them or casting doubts on the standard of her spoken Russian, must have been extremely therapeutic.

She should be the unofficial favourite to win the Tour's latest tier-one event, even though she is still seeded only fourth. There is no doubting she shares this feeling of optimism about her, but she is already too sage to couch it in such terms.

"After having so many setbacks last year, visiting so many doctors, and MRI offices, winning just feels so right," was her most pertinent comment.

Henin is not in Doha, which means Sharapova could close the gap on her. She should nevertheless face a significant test of her suddenly acquired accolade as the Tour's best player, especially from the Serbs Ana Ivanovic, who faced Sharapova in the Melbourne final, and Jelena Jankovic, the world No3, and possibly Venus Williams and Amélie Mauresmo.

Altogether 17 of the world's top 20 are in town, and one of them is Shahar Peer, whose decision to become the first Israeli to compete in a Gulf state has caused something of a sensation. She will get round-the-clock security and, apparently, be "treated like the emir's wife".

"She's an entry; she's a good player. It's a normal situation, and it gets a normal reaction from us," said the tournament director, Ayman Azmy.

A little reality check to that latest title headline.   Henin is currently almost a whopping 4000 points ahead of Sharapova in the rankings.

Yeah we'll have to wait until around September and around the US Open to see how many/ if any points Henin had dropped this year, and how many more Maria has gained from last year. For the next 6 months or so its about getting the number 2 ranking and closing the gap bit by bit of Henin.

I agree.   That is why I take exception to the article implying as if it could happen soon.  Clearly it cant. Also implying her winning here could take alot of that gap away, when it is really only about 10% of it.   The person writing it obviously does not understand the ranking system at all.   Henin has so many points stored up, including alot LATE last season which she wont have to defend until late this season, that even if she were to lose the #1 ranking this year it would not be until very late in the season.

Soon is just a stupid statement really as we both know, as although Maria has potential to make huge points up this year, this next 7 weeks being one of those biggest chances- its still going to be around the US Open that Maria would have her first real look at Henin and thats relying on Maria gaining a lot of points at all her events and Justine losing points at a few of hers. A win in Doha for Maria would just get her closer to that number 2 ranking, and with it being big points here with the upgrade to Tier 1 and Henin's points from last year coming off then the gap could be closed by around 900 or so points if everything went well, so that still leaves the gap at around 3000 points. Henin, unless injured keeps her number 1 ranking you'd have to feel until at least the week after the US Open, then it could be a real showdown for that spot.

Ypu would pick up more of a chance than me Swish as I practically see a new picture(s) of Maria every single day, so any changes are more gradual  :) One thing Maria has changed this year is her fringe- offcourt she has always got much more of a fringe and Maria's hair is also a little lighter- I like the fringe it really suits her, and as you say Swish I think it makes her look older  :)

Maria will begin her campaign at the Qatar Total Open in Doha, Qatar on Wednesday.  Maria will play #126 Galina Voskoboeva of Russia in the 2nd round after receiving a bye.  Maria has never played her compatriot before.

This match is scheduled to begin 3rd on Centre Court and the schedule of play begins at 15.30 Doha time (12.30GMT, 7.30ET & 4.30PT).
I'm off to work this morning and then watching this match later this afternoon- so very best of luck Maria, with you all the way  :)

MARIA OPENS UP DOHA CAMPAIGN WITH A WIN

In very windy conditions, Maria advanced to the 3rd round at the Qatar Total Open in Doha after she defeated Galina Voskoboeva of Russia 6-4 4-6 6-1 in 2 hours and 5 minutes.

The 1st set took 44 minutes as Maria won it 6-4.  In the middle of the set both players traded breaks and Maria got the crucial break to lead 5-4 and took the set on her serve.

Maria lost her 1st set of the year in the 2nd set as Voskoboeva took it 6-4.

In the 3rd set Maria was back and on fire as she re-took control of the match as she took the set 6-1.

Maria will play the 3rd round on Thursday and will play Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand.  They have played twice before and Maria leads the series 2-0.  The last meeting was in San Diego last year and Maria won 6-1 6-3.

Why did she lose a set?

Number of factors contributed to it really as without using a big excuse the wind hurt Maria quite a lot yesterday as it was very gusty, and generally Maria struggles with her game in the wind- so that was a huge factor as the conditions were very tough. Also it took Maria a couple of sets to get used to the Doha conditions, and also get rid of al ittle rustiness that could have crept into her game since last playing. Also it was an opponent Maria had never played before and took her a while(as it does with somebody like Fed) to get used to Voskoboeva's game. Finally you've got to give credit to Voskoboeva as she played a really good match, and tried to go out on court without any fear and that she could maybe challenge Maria- she played a very intelligent match in conditions which brought the 2 slightly closer together.

MARIA INTO DOHA QUARTERS

Maria has booked her spot in the quarters in Doha after she scored a straight sets win over Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand.  Maria triumphed 6-2 6-2 in 1 hour and 23 minutes.

Maria has now won 11 straight matches this year (7 at the Australian Open, 2 in Fed Cup and 2 in Doha).

In the 1st set it was level 2-2 and Maria then took the next 4 games to take the set 6-2 in 38 minutes.

The 2nd set was an exact repeat of the 1st as Maria powered her way into the quarters.

Maria will play #53 Danish teenager Caroline Wozniacki in the quarters on Friday.  They have never played before in WTA competition but they did play an exhibition in Hong Kong at the beginning of January and Maria won in straight sets.

Some stats for Maria in the Match vs Tanasugarn
1st serves in 63%
1st serve points won- 25/31(81%)
2nd serve points won- 11/18(61%)
Break points saved- 2/2(100%)
Break points won- 4/5(80%)
Total Service points won-36/49(73%)
Total return points won- 30/57(53%)
Points won- 66/106(62%)
