The MARIA SHARAPOVA THREAD - Quotes, Facts, Reports, Anything!
« on: December 16, 2007, 03:52:02 AM »
Right we've got a number of Fed threads, a Pete thread, an A-Rod thread and a Rafa thread so now it's time to make a thread just for my Princess Maria  :) Anything to do with Maria, whether it be quotes, facts, reports anything can be posted here now just like the other players with their own threads. I should have started this when I was first around here as after all I have been supporting Maria since March 2003, just a month before her 16th birthday. But think that now we've got more individual threads set up now so Maria can have one too.  :)

So here's a start with some facts about Maria:
Maria is only 20 and she has achieved a lot in a very short period of time, below in number form are some of things Maria has achieved:

1 - Maria's highest ranking which she first achieved in August 2005

2 - The number of Grand Slams Maria has won (Wimbledon 2004 & US Open 2006)

3 - Number of doubles titles Maria has (Japan Open 2003, Luxembourg 2003 & Birmingham 2004)

5 - The most top 10 players Maria has beaten in a row (Patty Schnyder and Nadia Petrova in Linz and Elena Dementieva, Kim Clijsters & Svetlana Kuznetsova at the WTA Championships in 2006)

8 - The number of countries Maria has won singles tournaments in (USA, Canada, Great Britain, Switzerland, Austria, Qatar, Japan & South Korea)

13 - Maria's seed when she won Wimbledon in 2004

14 - Maria's age when she made her WTA debut at Indian Wells in March 2002

14 - The number of weeks Maria has spent at #1

16 - Number of singles titles Maria has (Japan Open 2003, Quebec City 2003, Birmingham 2004, Wimbledon 2004, Seoul 2004, Japan Open 2004, WTA Championships 2004, Tokyo 2005, Doha 2005, Birmingham 2005, Indian Wells 2006, San Diego 2006, US Open 2006, Zurich 2006, Linz 2006 & San Diego 2007)

17 - Maria's age when she won Wimbledon in 2004 and she was the second youngest ladies Wimbledon singles champion in Open Era

19 - The most consecutive matches Maria has won from US Open - WTA Championships in 2006

23 - The number of doubles matches Maria has won

273 - The number of singles matches Maria has won

All of those numbers near enough are very impressive but 273 matches won on the Tour already and just 20, that's just an amazing achievement really!!

Lets hope so Herc! Maria will start her season with an exhibition in Singapore against Chalvetadze on the 30th December, so 2 weeks today and i just can't wait  :)

Hong Kong's Victoria Park will play host to six of the top 11 women in the world in January. Defending champion Elena Dementieva and ninth-ranked Daniela Hantuchova have joined the eight-player field for the JB Group Classic
exhibition event set for January 2-5 in Hong Kong.

The 11th-ranked Dementieva, who will be making her eighth appearance, and Hantuchova, scheduled to make her Hong Kong debut, round out a field that features Wimbledon winner Venus Williams, two-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova, French Open finalist Ana Ivanovic, U.S. Open semifinalist Anna Chakvetadze, China's Peng Shuai and Caroline Wozniacki, former Junior Wimbledon Champion.

First-round action pits Williams playing Peng Shuai and Ana Ivanovic facing Dementieva. Sharapova meets  Wozniacki. Winners of the main draw matches go into the JB Gold Group and the others go into the JB Silver Group.

"Apart from the Grand Slams you won’t find other tournaments that can bring six of the world’s top eleven to an event with a field of just eight," Hong Kong Tennis Patrons Association president Ian Wade said. "This is unique, and a fine achievement for the city of Hong Kong, even though it’s accustomed to large doses of success. There’s no doubt, our city is a world force, as indeed are its people and we should be proud our town can attract the very best athletes."

Michelle Larcher De Brito, who celebrates her 15th birthday on January 29, 2008, will play doubles and is the singles alternate for the exhibition. The Portuguese teenager will step in if any of the eight singles players are injured or forced to withdraw. Larcher De Brito debuted on the WTA Tour rankings at No. 364 in September to become the youngest player in the top 500 by one and a half years. Her 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(3) victory over veteran Meghann Shaughnessy at the Sony Ericsson Open in March made her the youngest player to win a WTA Tour main-draw match since the introduction of the age-eligibility rule in 1995.
Self-praise is for losers. Be a winner. Stand for something. Always have class, and be humble.

Her 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(3) victory over veteran Meghann Shaughnessy at the Sony Ericsson Open in March made her the youngest player to win a WTA Tour main-draw match since the introduction of the age-eligibility rule in 1995.

michelle larcher de brito is dazzling--both in looks and charms and her game. hope she can get into top 20 one day.

Was reading this article a couple of weeks ago and telling some of the guys on here what an impressive line up they have got together for the event in Hong Kong, should be a great 5 days and a good workout for all 8 women. Hope Maria comes through injury free and goes into Melbourne firing from the word go.

Conchita you should play our Fantasy tennis game that we're hoping to set up, I think you'd really get into it. I've tried to get Herc to do it but think he's scared that I'll beat him too often  :rofl_2: If your interested Conchita have a look at the thread at the top of the page.

Santana before winning Wimbledon he was quoted as saying "The grass is just for cows.", Kodes also said it and he won in 1973. :)
