Nalbandian injures back, in doubt for Australian Open

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) -- David Nalbandian injured his back hitting with Marat Safin at Melbourne Park on Wednesday and is a doubtful starter for next week's Australian Open.

Nalbandian, a 26-year-old Argentine whose last two title wins came over No. 1-ranked Roger Federer and No. 2-ranked Rafael Nadal at the Masters Series events in Madrid and Paris in October, said he would have medical scans later Wednesday to assess the damage.

"For sure I can't play. I can't even hit slowly with the ball," he said. "The best thing is to rest and get treatment. In two or three days, start hitting slowly again and see how it goes."

WOW! That's really depressing for him to be losing so badly in the qualifiers for a Grand Slam. I wonder how much longer he'd want to go on like this. Anyone see him retiring within the next 18 months?

Thanks for the pics barbadosan! Good to see Roger preparing for the event and seemingly pretty healthy after his illness earlier in the week.

Yes. Confirmed the last pic is also from today's practice. He sure doesn't look worried about lingering effects.

Robby lost 6-3 6-1

Or, more importantly, Alex Bogdanovic WON 6-3 6-1 :yahoo: against Ginepri. Ginepri has gone downhill ever since his semi-final in the US Open.

Boggo will next play Simon Stadler, and if he wins, probably a play-off against Robin Haase (top seed) for a spot in the main draw.

Another Brit, Jamie Baker, had a good start to his campaign, thrashing 9th seed Yuri |Schukin 6-2 6-0 :yahoo: He'll play Alex Peya of Austria next.

That was to Boggo Ginepri's defeat that's a great result for him but shows how bad the Ginepri decline really is. That'll be a huge confidence booster for Alex Bogdanovic and he should go into his next match on a real high and he'll need to stay like that if he's going to get past Haase in the final round if they both get that far. Good to see Jamie Baker get off to a great start as well with such an easy win over the 9th seed Schukin, Peya will be tough for him but if he plays as well as he must of today then he could well defeat him too. Would be great to see one of them get through to the main draw.

He was just giving Roddick a little false confidence so he could break him down again in Melbourne.

For Australian Open there has been some feed sightings in 4.2.2, there only for players trying to get in the main comp atm. When the big boys & girls start to play there be a good chance there be encrypited by feeds,if opens are like other years.ATP & WTA or masters are not encrypited by feeds these we can watch by feeds most of the time. For the likes of the Australian Open there are some normal channels that will show this, some are free 2 air. There will also be encrypited channels that you might find codes on the web.

Dont fight about tennis, support tennis.

I just didn't think I would be seeing a clay court tournament where Roddick is still in it and Nadal is out.   -   Dallas -  31 May, RG 2009
