It's absolutely disgusting and I'm made up they caught the thug who decided it would be a good idea to do that. Now I hope they will do 3 things! 1)Fine Real Betis a significant amount. 2)Make Real Betis play 2 games behind closed doors with no supporters at all allowed in. 3)Ban the thug who threw that at the keeper from all football grounds in Spain for the rest of his life.

I think they'll definitely do the 3rd one, the 1st one probably, but I dont see why other fans shouldnt be allowed in when they had nothing to do with it.

In order to show that any club supporters that do that will risk having their stadium closed down and to teach the club a lesson for this to not happen again. it's happened before in Italy and Turkey and I think its happened in Spain as well, I like the idea of doing that when supporters can't behave as it'll teach the rest that if they don't behave that will be the punishment for the club and the suporters.

4) the thug will spend 6 months at least in jail. not only a sporting ban to acces 4ever stadiums, also jail. then other thugs will perhaps think before they throw something dangerous to a player.

Excellent news Conchita that the Spanish FA will implement all 3 punishments, thats the right way to go and the only way with something as bad as this. Even better news as well that the thug will be spending the next 6 months of his life in a cell- lets hope there's a few Bilbao fans in that cell as well with him who can teach him yet another lesson  :))

ATHLETIC CLUB

Athletic Club is a Spanish football club from Bilbao in Biscay, Basque Country, Spain. The club has played in the Primera División of La Liga since its start in 1928. Of the founding members, only Athletic, Real Madrid, and FC Barcelona have never been relegated. Athletic are historically one of the most successful clubs in Spain. They have won La Liga on eight occasions and the Copa del Rey twenty-four times.

The club is known for its cantera policy of bringing young Basque players through the ranks, as well as recruiting top Basque players from other clubs. Athletic only signs professional players native to one of the seven Basque provinces: Biscay, Guipúzcoa, Álava and Navarre in Spain and Labourd, Soule and Lower Navarre in France. This has gained Athletic both admirers and critics. The club has been praised for promoting home grown players and club loyalty. Critics however see their policy as racist. Athletic Level of play  dropped since Bosman case and rest of clubs with a lot of foreign stars and in last decade usually fights to avoid relegation.

Estadio San Mamés
AKA La Catedral (The Cathedral), is a football stadium in Bilbao, Spain. The stadium is the home of Athletic Club Bilbao. They are known as "Los leones de San Mamés-Bilboko leoiak" (The lions of San Mamés). They are known as Los leones because their stadium was built near a church called San Mamés (Saint Mammes). Mammes was an early Christian thrown to the lions by the Romans. The lions refused to eat Mammes and he was later made a saint.
History, Opened in 1913, the stadium is Spain's oldest, condition that has granted it its nickname, and can seat almost forty thousand people. The current stadium was almost completely rebuilt to host matches in the 1982 FIFA World Cup.
In March 2006 new project has been approved to rebuild the stadium increasing seats up to 56,000. The New San Mamés Stadium will be built in the adjacent terrain that was occupied until 2003 by the Bilbao International Trade Fair. Three quarters of the stadium will be built and then the matches will take place in the new stadium and the old one will be demolished. In the remaining terrain the last side of the new stadium will be completed and the University of the Basque Country will build a new campus. Sad and cvontroversial, Cathedral demolished!!!

History
Bilbao FC, Athletic Club and Team Bizcaya

Football was introduced to Bilbao by two distinct groups of players, both with British connections; British steel and shipyard workers and Basque students returning from schools in Britain.
In the late 1800s Bilbao was a leading port at the heart of an important industrial area with iron mines and shipyards nearby. It was the driving force of the Spanish economy and as a result attracted many migrant workers. Among them were miners from the north-east of England, and shipyard workers from Southampton and Portsmouth. The British workers brought with them (as to so many other parts of the world) the game of football. In the early 1890s these workers came together and formed Bilbao Football Club.
Meanwhile, sons of the Basque educated classes had made the opposite journey and went to Britain to complete their studies in civil engineering and commerce. While in the United Kingdom these students developed an interest in football and on their return to Bilbao they began to arrange games with British workers. In 1898 students belonging to the Gymnasium Zamacois founded the Athletic Club, using the English spelling. In 1901 a meeting was held in the Cafe Garcia which established more formal rules and regulations.
In 1902 the two Bilbao clubs formed a combined team, known as Club Vizcaya , in the first Copa del Rey. They returned with the trophy after defeating FC Barcelona in the final. This would lead to the eventual merger of the two clubs as Athletic Club de Bilbao in 1903. In the same year Basque students also formed Athletic Club de Madrid. This club later evolved into Atlético Madrid. The club's foundation date is a subject of debate among football historians. The club itself declares 1898, but others claim 1901 is the true founding year. There is also a strong case for 1903.

Pichichi
Rafael Moreno Aranzadi (August 8, 1892 – March 1, 1922), known by the nickname Pichichi, was a Spanish footballer who played for Athletic Bilbao and Spain during the 1910s and 1920s.
Born in Bilbao,Vizcaya, Pichichi played in his first Copa del Rey final in March 1913. Athletic Bilbao lost 1-0 to Racing Club de Irún. Later the same year, on August 21, the same opponents, now known as Real Unión were invited to play the inaugural game at San Mamés Stadium. Pichichi scored the very first goal at the new stadium.
He subsequently played in another five Copa del Rey finals for Athletic Bilbao, winning four of them. These included a three a row sequence between 1914 and 1916. Pichichi scored a hat-trick in the 1915 final as Athletic beat RCD Español 5-0. Athletic were also runners-up in 1920 and winners again in 1921. In 1920 Pichichi was also a member of the very first Selección that played at the Olympic Games in Belgium.
He died in 1922, aged 29, the victim of a sudden attack of typhus. In 1926, a bust was erected in his honour outside the San Mamés Stadium. It is tradition for teams visiting in Primera the stadium for the first time pay homage by leaving a bouquet of flowers at its base.
In 1953, Spanish sports newspaper Marca introduced the Trofeo Pichichi in his honour. The trophy is awarded to the top goalscorers in the Primera División and the Segunda División.
Pichichi was easily identifiable on the pitch by his ever present white headgear and was noted as a prolific goalscorer. Pichichi and his future wife were also immortalised in a painting by Aurelio Arteta.

The First La Liga
Athletic were not the only Basque team represented in the 1920 squad. Other clubs such as Real Unión, Arenas Club de Getxo and Real Sociedad also provided players. These four clubs were all founding members of La Liga in 1928 and by 1930 they were joined by CD Alaves. This meant that five of the ten clubs in the Primera Division of Spain’s national league were from the Basque Country. The saying Con cantera y afición, no hace falta importación, translated as With home-grown teams and supporters, there is no need for imports made sense during these early days.

El BombínIn 1921 a new coach, Fred Pentland arrived from Racing Santander. In 1923 he led the club to victory in the Copa del Rey. He revolutionised the way Athletic played, favouring the short-passing game. In 1927 he left Athletic and coached Athletic Madrid, Real Oviedo and Spain. In 1929 he rejoined Athletic and he subsequently led Athletic to La Liga/Copa del Rey doubles in 1930 and 1931. The club won the Copa del Rey four times in a row between 1930 and 1933 and they were also La Liga runners-up in 1932 and 1933. In 1931 Athletic also defeated FC Barcelona 12-1, the latter’s worst ever defeat. (1st video, 0'52'')

Barca blow chance to cut lead

Sloppy defending at set-pieces saw Barcelona twice throw away leads as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Almeria.

ALMERIA 2 - 2 BARCELONA, 33,000.

Bojan Krkic gave Barca the lead before Rubén Pulido equalised with a header from a corner; Samuel Eto'o restored the advantage after the break, but Kalu Uche levelled late on with another unmarked header.

The result will be an enormous boost to Real Madrid, were beaten by Deportivo on Saturday but see their lead at the top of the table cut by just a point to seven.

Barcelona, shorn of eight first-team stars through injury and suspension certainly had a valid excuse for their lifeless performance, although they did look a much better side once coach Frank Rijkaard brought Thierry Henry off the bench in the second half.

Barcelona took an 18th-minute lead when Bojan tucked home his fifth league goal of the season from close range after Almeria keeper Diego Alves had tamely palmed Andres Iniesta's low shot into his path.

But the Catalan giants otherwise looked lacklustre allowing Almeria to grow in confidence as the half went on, and it came as no surprise when they grabbed an equaliser, Rubén Pulido, a former Real Madrid man, ghosting in unmarked at a corner to guide a header inside the far post.

The goal sparked five minutes of desperate defending from Barca, who were twice fortunate not to concede a second, Víctor Valdés needing to be alert to efforts from Negredo and Juan Manuel Ortiz.

Bojan had a chance to put his side back in front three minutes before the break when he sprinted on to Iniesta's superb pass, but Alves palmed away his one-on-one effort.

Rijkaard threw on Henry for defensive midfielder Edmilson 10 minutes into the second half as he searched for more of a cutting edge in the final third, and earned immediate reward for his decision.

Henry ghosted past Aitor López Rekarte on the left-edge of the box before pulling the ball back from the dead-ball-line to Eto'o, who stabbed home from close range.

The former Arsenal made should have put the game to bed just five minutes later, but he hit his shot straight at the keeper after cutting in from the left to meet Bojan's low cross.

The sending off of Argentina defender Gabriel Milito with 15 minutes remaining meant a reshuffle at the back for Barcelona, and they looked to be comfortably holding on to the points.

That was until substitute Uche made a near-post run at a corner to glance a header inside the far post in identical fashion to Almeria's opener, to the obvious dismay of everyone on the Barca bench.

- - - -

ATLETICO MADRID 3-0 LEVANTE, 50,000.

Uruguay striker Diego Forlan scores either side of half-time as Atletico Madrid moved them back in to fourth place on 47 points, two ahead of Sevilla and Espanyol in fifth and sixth respectively. Portugal winger Simao scored the opener after 25 minutes before Forlan finished the game.

- - - -

VILLARREAL 2 REAL ZARAGOZA 0, 36,000

Turkish striker Nihat Kahveci lobbed the keeper to put Villarreal ahead after only 11 minutes but it was Zaragoza who dominated from there on as they called Diego Lopez into action on numerous occasions. The home side were awarded a penalty in the 66th minute which Italian striker Giuseppe Rossi put away to leave Zaragoza deep in relegation trouble.

- - - -

ESPANYOL 2 REAL MALLORCA 1, 50,000.

Mallorca will wonder how they lost this one after striker Daniel Guiza gave them an early lead, as they created a host of chances. They were pegged back when Espanyol's Luis Garcia was fouled in the area just after the break, and the Spain striker levelled from the penalty spot. Garcia grabbed his second with a far-post header in the 89th minute.

- - - -

GETAFE 2 RACING SANTANDER 1, 25,000.

Getafe gained the psychological edge over their Copa del Rey semi-final opponents ahead of Wednesday's second leg, with this comeback win. Poland striker Ebi Smolarek headed Racing in front just after the break but Nigeria striker Ikechukwu Uche levelled with a far post half-volley in the 67th minute. Midfielder Jaime Gavilan headed the winner 13 minutes from time and Racing goalkeeper Tono lost his head to get himself sent off. Getafe's Braulio followed him down the tunnel.

- - - -

VALLADOLID 0 OSASUNA 0, 30,000.

Struggling Valladolid edged out of the relegation places with this draw while Osasuna made it four games unbeaten.

Betis handed stadium ban

Athletic Bilbao have been awarded a 2-1 victory and Real Betis have been given a two-match stadium ban after a match between the sides was abandoned when Bilbao goalkeeper Armando was hit by a bottle thrown from the stands.

The ruling by the Spanish Football Federation came after Saturday's match at Bilbao's Manuel Ruiz de Lopera stadium was abandoned in the 69th minute after a fan struck Armando in the face with a bottle full of liquid as the goalkeeper turned to retrieve the ball from behind the goal.

Bilbao were winning the game 2-1 at the time and the RFEF said in a statement on their website: "The result will stand from when the game was stopped.

"Betis will be fined 9,000 euros (£7,031) and will have their sporting facilities closed for two matches."

Armando was struck just below the eye and received stitches for the wound.

The president of the RFEF's Competition Committee, Alfredo Florez, revealed the swift apprehension of the man involved meant Betis avoided a four-match ground ban.

"The quick identification of the aggressor has been an extenuating factor in the sanctions against the Seville club," he said.

"Those around the aggressor reacted immediately in identifying him, stopping him and handing him over to the police."

Florez also explained why the Committee decided to award the match to Athletic rather then replay the fixture.

"(When play was halted) there were only a few minutes left and Athletic had already made their three substitutions and had had to continue with 10 players and without their goalkeeper," Florez added.

"That goes against the fairness of the competition."

Betis have been given a 10-day deadline if they wish to appeal the decision.

The man who threw the bottle had earlier insisted that he meant no harm.

His lawyer, Alvaro Pimentel, said: "My client is deeply sorry. He didn't want to injure Armando. Carmelo is really affected by all this because he is a true Betis fan.

"All he asks now is that people show respect towards his family."

it is not the first time such an incident has occurred at the Manuel Ruiz de Lopera.

Last season, Sevilla coach Juande Ramos, now at Tottenham, was knocked out after being hit by a bottle thrown from the stands during a Copa del Rey quarter-final match there.

That game was abandoned and the remaining 33 minutes played behind closed doors at Getafe's stadium while Betis were given a three-match stadium ban.

-----------------------------------------

Ruud out for season after op

Real Madrid striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is set to miss the season run-in after undergoing ankle surgery.

After several weeks suffering a niggling injury in the right ankle due to synovitis, the Netherlands hit-man underwent an operation that, while not definitively ending his campaign, is likely to see him return in pre-season.

It had initially been thought that he would be able to feature after a period of rest, but he swelling worsened in recent days and the player was not even in the match squad for the defeat to Deportivo at the weekend.

Van Nistelrooy, 31, first felt pain during the defeat to Getafe three and a half weeks ago. He is Real's second top scorer with 12 Liga goals this season.

Los Merengues lead the Primera Division by seven points from Barcelona with ten games remaining.

Copa del Rey - Getafe reach second consecutive final

Getafe reached their second consecutive Copa del Rey final after drawing 1-1 away to Racing Santander in their semi-final second leg.

Michael Laudrup's side won the first leg 3-1 at home last month and survived a torrid time at the Sardinero after Pedro Munitis gave Racing an early lead.

They withstood intense pressure until the second-half dismissal of Racing striker Oscar Serrano, after which Francisco Casquero snatched a late equaliser.

Getafe, who face Bayern Munich in a UEFA Cup quarter-finals next month, lost 1-0 to Sevilla in their first final appearance last season.

They will meet either Valencia or Barcelona, who play the other semi-final second leg at the Mestalla on Thursday. The scores are level at 1-1. The final is on April 16.

Getafe were penned back as last-four debutants Racing piled forward in search of an early breakthrough which they got after seven minutes.

Jorge Lopez collected a short corner and drilled a low ball across the face of the goal for forward Munitis to stab in from close range.

The rest of the half ebbed and flowed with both goalkeepers making important interventions. Racing missed the clearest opening for a second just before the break.

Serrano's low cross found Mohamed Tchite sliding into the six-yard box but the striker somehow put the ball over the bar.

Racing stepped up the pressure again after the break and it was one-way traffic as Gonzalo Colsa, Tchite and Ebi Smolarek all went close.

But the second yellow card for Serrano in the 76th minute proved the turning point.

Five minutes later, Getafe worked the ball across the edge of the area to substitute Casquero who lashed a shot high into the net.

Racing complained bitterly as defender Ezequiel Garay went down injured in the build up to the goal, and tempers boiled over in the tunnel after the final whistle.

Ronaldinho out

Ronaldinho has been left out of the Barcelona squad to visit Valencia for their Copa del Rey semi-final second leg.

The Brazil forward missed the 2-2 draw away to Almeria in the league on Sunday, with coach Frank Rijkaard saying the player was injured.

After a scan on an adductor muscle in his right leg, the club's medical services said there was no evidence of an injury to the muscle or tendon and that Ronaldinho was suffering from "medical problems".

He returned to train with the rest of the team on Wednesday morning but failed to make the squad.

Team-mate Andres Iniesta, meanwhile, refuted claims that he missed the Almeria match and subsequent training sessions as punishment for a midweek night out.

"He has a few niggles," the Spain midfielder explained to Marca. "Everyone reacts to pain differently and I don't know what's going on in his body but if he's hurt then he's hurt.

"There is no player who does not love playing, especially someone as important as Ronaldinho."

Yaya Toure and Gianluca Zambrotta returned to the side. Lionel Mesi, Deco, Rafael Marquez and Giovani dos Santos are injured.

Barça enter the game at the Mestalla with the scores level at 1-1 from the first leg.

It's very lucky for Real Madrid that they have a 7 point lead in the La Liga title race right now as that loss of Van Nistelrooy is going to hurt them so badly, they seem to sruggle dramatically for goals when he's not in the starting line up.

nº1 priority is Euro 2008 with Netherlands and not Real Madrid.

If thats the case thats a disgrace and Real should really start to think about getting another striker who wants to put the club before/level with country. Now you see why Van Nistelrooy was kicked out of our club a couple of years ago.
