Venus Williams has yet to decide whether she is healthy enough to contest the Australian Open. Williams recently pulled of the tournament in Auckland. The 31-year-old has not played a WTA match since pulling out of her second-round contest at the U.S. Open; shortly after, she announced that she had been diagnosed with the auto-immune disease Sjogren’s syndrome. Williams will make a decision about the tournament in the next few days. At an exhibition in Florida at the end of last month, Venus said that her main goal is to be healthy for the 2012 Olympics.

Venus withdraws from Australian Open

Venus Williams has withdrawn from next week's Australian Open. She announced her decision on her web site.

"I regret to announce that I am withdrawing from the 2012 Australian Open. After several months of training and treatment, I am making steady progress to top competitive form. My diet and fitness regimen have allowed me to make great strides in terms of my health and I am very close to being ready to return to WTA competition. I have every intention to return to the circuit in February."

Venus also withdrew from her second-round match at her last tournament, the 2011 U.S. Open, saying that she had been diagnosed with Sjogren's syndrome.

A source told that the 31-year-old Williams is in good shape, but that she wants to make sure that she's 100 percent healthy before returning. Venus hopes to play the United States' Fed Cup tie against Belarus in early February in Worcester, Mass.

The tape is back, but it seems she is all right. Maybe it's just for an additional support.

Glad she won her first round match today. Loads of unforced errors, and she wasn't happy with her game, but at the end she won. Let's hope it will only get better now.

But, Mariana Alves as an empire... The fact that she is still a chair after US Open 2004, is just a joke. I hope she won't be umpiring any more of Serena's matches. I don't believe she can ever be 100% fair.

so after the match serena made it sound like shes next going to play fed cup in the first weekend of february, then miami in the end of march.

she really needs to play another tournament in between if her ankel is well enough. the older she gets, the more difficult it will be to work her way into a tournament. she really needs to treat miami like a grand slam. she has an awesoem record there, but a warm up tournament i think could do her wonders if shes only going to play fed cup in the next 2 months.

I would rather she didn't play Fed Cup. She needs to heal her ankle first, I don't want her to play on it and then have ongoing problems. Please Sarin!

She says she's going to play but she and Venus say that every year and never do. I remember hearing though about a rule saying you don't have to actually play in the rubbers to be eligible for the olympics (which we all know is why they would even play) but to just be on the team and attend the matches? If that's the case that's what I think Serena and Venus will do even if they are healthy enough to play.

It seems to have been confirmed this time. They (Serena and Venus) will play in the USA team against Belarus (aka Azarenka). Don't know whether it's a good thing, knowing Serena may not be OK by then

I thought it was odd that they'd sign on to Fed Cup at this point in their careers.

Thanks for the clarification regarding participation in the Olympics, that explains I think.

That being said, The Chief mentioned she'd like to see them in action and it is just down the road a piece.....and tickets should be easy to come by.
