It's funny; most members on the boxing forum I am on think tennis is gay and tedious; it seems on here most think very little of boxing or combat sports in general and view it as some form of barbarism.

I must be the only one who loves both sports, and only these 2 sports, because of the similarities I see in each one that are required to be a great champion: great footwork, speed, fantastic conditioning, timing and above all mentality and the will to survive and thrive. I am a weird one though so whateva' I love chess; and tennis and boxing, when at their highest levels, are frantic, frenetic chess matches that require mind over matter. My Truth

No, no, Pacer also loves boxing as much as I hate it. I just don't get it. Oh well.

I do like chess although find it to be very time consuming but should play at least one time with MT. I also love Cricket but gotta admit, don't get to watch as much because the sport is so unknown to North American people. It's a beautiful game and very stylish too. I love any card games and I like to think I am very good at it too.

Couldn't Brad Gilbert-ian tactics be used in boxing as well as tennis?  Fighting a bout to your strengths and your opponents weaknesses?  Avoiding an opponents real strength or something?  Like a right hook?

Alot of fighters do do that; watching alot of tape on an opponent and working on a gameplan during training camp to capitalize on an opponents weaknesses. Some fighters, like a Floyd Mayweather, are so good they don't watch tape and only do the usual: speed bag, heavy bag, sparring, etc. just to get on point; then go intothe fight and pick their opponents apart. Some guys actually do worse trying to get a gameplan against an opponent, as they have styles that they can't really adjust, and always en up reverting to type. Some guys have tremendous abilities to absorb punishment, and try to win through attritition and mentally wearing an opponent down late in the fight; but they usually lose to top notch boxers who can avoid getting into a punch out and outpoint them. Baskin Robbins in boxing, as it is in tennis.

Yes it is taxing. It's very taxing sparring, especially when you do 3 minute rounds and at the end of each round a fresh sparring partner is put in front of you. It's very mentally challenging trying to think when another peson is trying to take your head off; especially when you get tired. But tennis is as bad mentally, especially when you go into epic 5 setters, adrenaline dumping tie breakers, etc. I haven't played tennis in a long time but just watching those Baghdatis/Hewitt type matches is taxing enough sitting on the couch. Good stuff.
