Reports say that Sabathia is now a NY Yankee. The deal... $160 million dollars over 7 years. $22 million per year.
So (this from Mike and Mike) at the same time the US econmoy is going in the tank, and people are losing jobs all over the place, and both the Yankees and Mets are asking the city of New York (which by the way is on the verge of bankrupcy) for help with their new stadiums (so they can have all their luxury boxes), the Mets give K-rod $37 million for 3 years and the Yankees give Sabathia the richest contract any pitcher has ever gotten.

Crazy....Sabathia, in my opinion, is not even a great pitcher.  He's very good, but not great.  If you combine that with the fact that he is always overweight, this is not such a great deal for the Yankees.  Sabathia just came along at the right time because there are no top pitchers available this year. 

For him, there is a major bonus here - NY has a hot dog stand on every corner!

I think CC is a great pitcher.....until playoff time at least.

Jamesd, Kerry Wood will likely sign with the Indians.

*Kerry is my all-time favorite Cub--top of a list of 1. Until now, the Cubs have held out hope for Kerry and he had remained loyal, opting to resign for less and accept a reduced role as a closer. Understandably, looks like the Cubs patience finally ran dry.

**Kerry's 1 dribbler infield hit, 0 (zero) balls reaching the outfiled, facing 1 over the minimum batters, and record 20 K/0 BB v Houston's "Killer Bs" ranks as MLB #1 pitched game of all-time.

Carl Pavano has been my all time favorite Yankee....

Yes, he officially became an Indian.  It's a darn shame his arm didn't stay healthy or Nolan Ryan may have had some company atop the strikeout list.

He wants lots of money ($20+ mil) and lots of years. Nobody wants to take the chance on a long term deal. He'd better figure it out quickly.
But the x-factor is Scott Boras. Boras may have been the guy who convinced him to shoot his way out of Boston. Boras had been his agent for years, but had not gotten paid from his Boston contract (which had been negotiated by Morad). Boras wants to maximize this lucrative client as much as possible before he gets too old. Boras may be driving this more than Ramirez.

In other (good) news (unless you are a Mets fan). Citigroup is reportedly trying to pull back their $400 million committment to the Mets. I'm guessing that was for new stadium naming rights. The Mets are already realing because ownership was hit hard by the Madoff ponzi scheme.

Manny Ramirez to finally resign with the Dodgers.
This results in what I think is a net loss for Ramirez. He allowed Scott Boras to convince him he could get $100 million if he forced himself out of the $40 million he could have gotten with the Red Sox. He blew his bridges up spectacularlly in Boston. He damaged his career, and reputation, and nets about $2 or $3 million with only one year guarrenteed.  He can opt out next year and test the waters next year, but he will be 39.
Had he stayed in Boston, he may have been able to be a free agent this year and he would have gotten a bigger contract because more teams would have trusted his intentions. The alternative would have been a measly $20 million.
Instead he is a one man island. His teammates will accept him becuase they have to, and because he can rake. But if he doesn't rake, he will be nuclear waste.

I went to the Texas Ranger's game today.  We won  - again.  Uhm.. let me say the FIRST PLACE Rangers won again today! (of course we'll fall apart pretty soon) but until then... I can say we're in first place!

He's 3-4 this year and sitting on 298 wins. Yeah, I think it's safe to say this will be his final season.

Everyone in this area has learned to appreciate them while they are winning because every year the ultimate happens - they will fall back into last place.
