I have stopped using the term, no man's land, in my doubles
presentations and classes.
The area around the service line is known as this by many
and it implies that you should not ever be there. This is
definately not true, in fact, many times you need to be exactly
there to attack or defend the situation. I call it the most
difficult place to play and a great deal of skill is needed
to be successful there, and therefore you need to spend as
little time there as required. But how well you can play in
that area determines the level you can compete in doubles.
I teach extensively how to play around the service line, but
I also teach to leave as soon as possible. In my opinion there
is no, "no man's land".
