About Tennis String - Part 1
Did you know that tennis strings can make a big difference
on how you perform on the court? As a matter of fact, tennis
strings are just as important as your racquet. A good racquet
but not so good strings may keep you from playing well. Today,
there are many types of strings ranging from natural gut,
synthetic gut, multifilament, nylon, kevlar, and polyester
strings.
Gauge:
Strings come in many different gauges. The gauges range from
15L (1.35mm) to 19 (1.10mm). You may ask what is the main
difference in the gauges? Well in general, thinner gauges
provide more access to spin and may offer a bit more pop.
Thinner strings are also less durable yet more playable. On
the other hand, the thicker strings have a lot of durability
and may even firm up the stringbed. Choosing the right gauges
will help you raise your game to the next level.
How often should I change strings?:
Generally speaking, you should change your strings whenever
you feel the performance has dropped and/or there has been
a significant drop in tension. Of course if you break your
string then you should change it as well.
What is hybrid stringing?:
Hybrid stringing is when you take two different strings and
string them up into 1racquet. Many people today use this method
as it provides more feel, power, control, and spin. Usually
when stringing hybrids, people combine polyester with either
natural gut or synthetic gut strings. This provides both durability
and playability. Hybrids are also popular nowadays because
they soften up the stringbed and provide better feel and touch.
That's it for now! In the next edition, we will be talking
about the different types of strings and how each string will
alter your performance.
